The “sit unused the majority of the week” comment drives me up the wall as a church staff meme we. This week alone we had 3 Bible studies, a Trail Life troop, 2 weddings/wedding rehearsals, choir practice, grief support group, plus pastors and staff who use the office…
Churches have huge buildings that sit unused the majority of the week. They should add gyms, co-working spaces, cafes, and bookstores. These can all be revenue generating ventures that have the added benefit of building community and engaging with the public.

Much of the year we have not one but TWO music schools meeting for lessons on different days, and they use out facilities for their recitals

I can always tell a student who came to violin/viola from piano. Often excellent readers/learners but have great difficulty finding good tone and intonation. Have to hear it before hand, unlike with the keyboard.
Pianists generally have the least developed and most unmusical ears (inner/active listening skills).

Love that feel when you’ve been practicing well in the weeks leading up to a gig, show up to the first rehearsal and realize you DID practice well. Funny how well things go when you prepare 😂

I taught an into class to non musician college freshman for many years. It was incredibly rewarding to see a kid experiencing their first Beethoven 5 or Purcell Dido & Aeneas. Classical music has broader appeal than we expect
I think it’s plain that many people who are into classical music don’t think about it enough from the perspectives of those who are more casual or indifferent about it. Doing so with hundreds of utterly unexposed students and locals every year has reshaped my whole perspective.

This is very relatable as a freelance musician. “They haven’t called me in six months” feels terrible even if you played there 10 times in the previous season. I savor every gig in places I enjoy because every time might be the last time (for a while, at least)
It's a weird thing about being a freelance writer that even in a pretty good year you can still feel like you just haven't really written enough or "arrived" or w/e. You get one byline and think "But I haven't placed again there in months" or "But I still want THAT byline..."

An interesting comparison is each composer’s solo viola elegies. Stravinsky’s is much more inventive/complex, but Glazunov’s is infinitely more beautiful
An aside: Glazunov’s Second Piano Concerto in one movement is extraordinarily beautiful. Stravinsky was capable of a lot, and had a much bigger mind and even imagination than did Glazunov, but he couldn’t write something like that concerto. This particular stuff matters to me.

True. Henry Van Til missed the mark with this catchphrase.
“Culture is religion externalized” seems to imply that a universal religion would produce a universal culture. Obviously false, historically and conceptually. It’s another vain attempt to universalize—the modern western obsession.

Everyone loved Dolly, and rightfully so, but one of the reasons she was so special to the South was that she achieved the heights of fame but never felt like she had to disown where she came from. She never had to prove she was a "good one." She didn't turn up her nose at us.
