In January 1969, Jimi Hendrix was banned from the BBC after derailing a live broadcast with a defiant, unscripted tribute. He was scheduled to play ‘Hey Joe’ on ‘Happening for Lulu’, then bring Lulu herself onstage for a rehearsed duet. But midway through the performance, Hendrix unexpectedly stopped and launched into a thunderous rendition of Cream’s ‘Sunshine of Your Love’ instead. Cream had just split up, and Hendrix’s surprise gesture was his way of honoring a group he deeply respected. The BBC and producer Stanley Dorfman were furious.
