The man who invented the operation that saves babies born with blue-baby syndrome had no medical degree, no college degree, and was listed on the payroll as a JANITOR.
He guided the first operation from a stool behind the surgeon's shoulder, telling him where to cut.
Vivien Thomas. He had been saving to study medicine when the 1929 crash wiped out his savings and the bank holding them.
He took a job as a lab assistant at Vanderbilt for a janitor's wage, because that was the classification available.
Within a couple of years he was running experimental surgery — developing techniques, performing operations on his own, training surgeons.
He moved to Johns Hopkins with Alfred Blalock in 1941, where he was still paid as a janitor and had to enter through a back door.
He was the only Black man in that building not carrying a mop.
He worked out the surgical fix for tetralogy of Fallot — the condition killing infants who turned blue and died — and built the instruments for it.
The first operation on a child was in 1944. Blalock, who had never done the procedure, asked Thomas to stand behind him and talk him through it.
The surgeons on the paper became world famous. Thomas was not credited.
Hopkins hung his portrait in 1971 and gave him an honorary doctorate in 1976. Generations of surgeons he personally trained insisted on it.
He was paid as a cleaner while inventing heart surgery.

Ilan Pappe has a new piece out titled, "Why Al-Aqsa Flood Happened."
In it, he argues that Yahya Sinwar confronted Israel similar to how Anwar Sadat confronted Israel in 1971 & Palestinian leaders such as Yasser Arafat in 2000.

Hamas had negotiated with Israel for an end to the 17-year siege strangling Gaza, an increase in food entering Gaza, & release of Palestinian political prisoners. The Israeli army advised Netanyahu to respond to these demands with an all-out attack on Gaza. Al-Aqsa Flood was an attempt to preempt this attack.
This was a breakout from the ghetto by a people who had suffered thousands of deaths, tens of thousands of injuries among children and women, and hundreds of thousands of people losing their homes in the 2014 Israeli assault and remaining displaced in 2023; they were a traumatized population subjected to starvation as a matter of policy during the seventeen-year Israeli blockade and to frequent bombardment from the air, land, and sea.

El-Sayed is absolutely right on the subject of genocide. It is wonderful to hear a politician using the language of prevention so deftly. It offers hope for the future at a time when genocide is out of control globally.
We invite all candidates and political leaders, from all countries, parties, and ideologies, to see their work in terms of genocide prevention.
Preventing genocide is one of the most important tasks of good leadership, and yet it is almost never discussed. It requires the ability to self-critique as an individual and as a member of a group as well as a genuine investment in good governance and serving the people.
We certainly hope more anti-genocide candidates will emerge in the coming decade.
Scott Galloway tells El-Sayed that using the term genocide potentially justifies a genocide against Jews. El-Sayed responds:
1) Do we have to wait until more people get killed?
2) Calling something a genocide does not justify a genocide. That is not the argument anyone's making.
3) Neither you nor I are scholars on genocide. I leave it to scholars on genocide in Israel itself who've called this a genocide.
