NEW: The Times’s Credit Crisis
A recent New York Times front-page feature on chemical plants in the Trump era had deep reporting, stark data visuals, and an uncanny resemblance to a smaller outlet’s earlier investigation. Was this a case of unacknowledged inspiration, a steroidal dose of Times exceptionalism, or sheer coincidence?

Notably, the @nytimes still hasn't posted the article to X! Above the fold, Sunday edition, nowhere on X. Makes you think :)

‘Greece at the Turning Point’ is finally here! It has been an honor to steward the stories of the Marshall Plan and help them find a wider audience. There is so much to learn from an effort to create a better world 80 years ago. Register for my book talk: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F…

We gave the Times the chance to do the right thing yesterday.
Instead, they’re going with an argument that basically boils down to:
*We randomly produced our first ever plume model about the exact same incident that Hunterbrook exposed with a plume model
*We randomly took a lead photo of the exact same home on the exact same street
*We randomly interviewed the same expert
Etc.
They wrote a great story. Obviously, we care about the subject deeply. It’s just a huge bummer for our team and the reporters who worked relentlessly on these stories.
Breaking: Several sections of @NYTimes front page story today mirror two earlier Hunterbrook investigations — without attribution.
Images. Methods. Sources.

For the last few months, I’ve been talking to writers, editors, professors, technologists, and publishing people about AI writing detectors and what it means for the entire writing ecosystem. There seems to be a new controversy every week where someone loads an author’s work into @pangram and gleefully posts a score “proving” that the writer’s work is synthetic.
It’s a new sort of literary scandal, but one with much fuzzier contours. For centuries the cardinal sin of writing was plagiarism, but plagiarism is something easy to define objectively. You compare two pieces of writing and see how close they are to one another before making a call about whether one author has lifted another’s work. Unless a writer admits to it or agrees to a full forensic computer investigation, figuring out whether they used AI to write for them is more difficult to determine. That doesn’t mean that these writers accused of cheating the system didn’t use AI, it just means that there’s a fog over the accusation that may never lift.
In talking to @max_spero_ for this story a while back, we talked a lot about the truth and why the truth is important. I believe Max cares a lot about the truth and his mission in wanting to insulate humans from asymmetrical slop warfare is great. But in reporting this story out I think that, far from being a tool that reveals the truth, AI detectors are injecting something far more chaotic into the conversation about writing: Doubt.

Two Marks, One Pack. 🐺 Introducing our two new logos, honoring who we are while looking ahead to what’s next. 💙

ALT A graphic with text "Two Marks. One Pack." features the University of Nevada, Reno logo and a Nevada Wolf Pack logo against a blue-toned campus background.

ALT The image features a large, stylized "UN" interlocked logo. In the background, there is an old, ornate building with a prominent central tower. The text above reads "The Interlocked Logo," and below the logo, it states: "Our symbol of institutional authority founded on a long history of excellence, but timeless in both meaning and design.
Really great logo re-design for my grad alma mater,
@unevadareno. The Nevada shape, with the star where Reno is, embedded in the N is a nice touch.
Richard Nixon, unbelievably, is cool again — thanks to a marketing campaign called "Nixonmaxxing." Here's why that might help Gen Z get into history.
