Extract from the book #DomPhillips was writing at the time of his death: "How to Save the Amazon: A journalist's deadly quest for answers". theguardian.com/world/2025/m… @guardian
A must-read for us all and out soon in the UK. The Dom Phillips institute: institutodomphillips.org.br/…
Hugely proud of @tivonnehowe of @LancsUniLEC for passing her PhD viva today, on CO2 and volatiles in Lesser Antilles volcanic systems. TiVonne funded by Government of Montserrat & well on way to becoming first female volcanologist from the island! @UKinMontserrat @mvoms – at Bailrigg, England
TiVonne worked in close collaboration with Severine Moune of @UCA_Recherche and Thomas Christopher of @mvo_ms. Thanks to external examiner Marie Edmonds of @EarthSciCam and internal Peter Wynn!
First PhD paper:
doi.org/10.3389/feart.2024.1… – at Bailrigg, England
Super proud of my son Alec (no. 11, right) and all the @DallamSchool U16 boys football team for winning the Cumbria County Cup today 💥👏🏼⚽ – at Lancaster, England
Congrats to @LancsUniLEC PhD student @tivonnehowe for publishing her first paper, on magmatic CO2 and storage depths at her volcano, Soufriere Hills, Montserrat. New insights into the depth of magma storage and CO2 systematics: frontiersin.org/journals/ear…
Almost all CO2 in melt inclusions is hidden in bubbles. TiVonne used Raman spectroscopy and ion microprobe analysis to provide the first measurement of total magmatic CO2 for Soufriere Hills #Volcano. Her results reveal transcrustal magma storage and quantify CO2 fluxes.
Work in collaboration with @soufriere_hills of @mvoms, plus Severine Moune and Federica Schiavi of @UCAuvergne. TiVonne's PhD research is supported by the Government of Montserrat @UKinMontserrat
Over on #BlueSky I'm posting about our fantastic @LancasterUni #Volcanology #Masters students graduating and more bsky.app/profile/htuffen.bsk… – at Lancaster, England
Important new paper from scientists and critical thinkers Andy Jarvis (@LancsUniLEC) and @piersforster challenges us to recalibrate anthropogenic climate warming at a new preindustrial baseline and recognise we're already at 1.5C. Emphasises need for urgent climate action! – at Lancaster, England
Humans may already have caused 1.5°C of global warming according to new measurements against a time genuinely before the industrial revolution. Our own Dr Andrew Jarvis is lead author of the @NatureGeosci paper that explains the method and results

In August 2024, I recorded 65 fatal landslides around the world, which claimed 414 lives. The total number of fatal landslides in 2024 continues to exceed any previous year by a significant margin, probably reflecting high global atmospheric temperatures.

New paper! These authors look at the shape of volcanic domes and spines globally including how shape evolves with time during emplacement.

IAVCEI is saddened to learn that Hans-Ulrich Schmincke passed away on 24/08/24 at the age of 86. He was SG of IAVCEI between 1983-1991, and awarded the Thorarinsson medal in 1993. During his mandate, he revamped the publication model of BV, a legacy that we profit from today
Fantastic initiative from @cumbriawildlife, at Skiddaw in Cumbria, could restore Atlantic rainforest and peatland, creating the highest nature reserve in England. Please support and share widely!
📢 INCREDIBLE news – together, we have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to protect 3000 acres of land for nature!
Could you donate to make this epic project a reality? 👇

It is very unlikely that the eruption will reach any infrastructure now 👍 but it has ignited extensive wildfires. The burning moss is thick and lush and it's a very sad sight #Reykjanes #Grindavik #volcano
New paper led by @Volcannabelle uses microtextures & volatiles in #obsidian from #Krafla, #Iceland to reveal how silicic lava is produced (from pyroclasts) and how silicic fissure eruptions focus. Congrats to the team inc @WadsworthFabian and @hollyeunwin, & thanks @landsvirkjun!
🚨 I published a paper today! 🚨
We found unambiguous evidence for the formation of silicic lava by pyroclast sintering.

‘Heroes in the fire’ is a short film telling the story of local fire brigades risking their lives to tackle wildfires in the Amazon rainforest.
Our own Professor Jos Barlow (@JosBarlow) commissioned the film after seeing the brigades during research trips studying the forest.
Funded by @UKRI and Lancaster University, the film is now available to watch at lancaster.ac.uk/news/heroes-…
