"Hate wins when people like me stand by and let it happen. I won't." - Mallory McMorrow #whitesuburbanwoman

Senator Lana Theis accused me by name of grooming and sexualizing children in an attempt to marginalize me for standing up against her marginalizing the LGBTQ community...in a fundraising email, for herself. Hate wins when people like me stand by and let it happen. I won't.

While I am honored to know countless women who have influenced me in every positive way imaginable, I want to, on this International Women's Day, send my heartfelt admiration to the women of Ukraine who are facing the unimaginable. Incomparable courage. #ukrainematters #grateful
Please: be kind to educators. Now and forever. Thread by @ClintSmithIII: I know I keep saying it, but now that we're a full year into this thing I'm just blown away by how millions of teachers across the country have completely shifted and reimagined...… threadreaderapp.com/thread/1…
Really struggling to understand what people mean when they say “I’m desperately worried that kids are going to be “behind”. Behind what? Aren’t most of us trying to teach & learn while we also endure the trauma of literally trying to survive a pandemic?

Why? Because adults told them that is what matters. I don’t understand why peace, comfort, flexibility, & love are not what drive all discussions of students during this time. If it means we need to reinvent some things in education, tap the brakes, think outside the box...

that would certainly be an improvement over our current tired and inequitable systems. We have an opportunity to do more than put pressure on kids by saying they are going to be “behind”. Adults need to do better for our children.

THIS. Thread by @funnymonkey: We need to reopen schools. We need to reopen schools before more people realize that all the technology purchased with millions of taxpayer dollars to transform education doesn't really work...… threadreaderapp.com/thread/1…

"We cannot fight ignorance with fake reading." -@pennykittle Today should make us all think very carefully about student engagement: what it means, who students are, what they want. At minimum, we owe them the respect they deserve-let them CHOOSE so they can learn to love reading

Wanted to throw a bit of GA joy into this newsfeed of doom. Thank you, GA, & every organizer who encouraged people to use their voices to speak louder than the seditionist mob in & out of our beautiful Capitol. We hear you. @ossoff & @ReverendWarnock❤️thank you❤️@staceyabrams❤️

We did a little game of “keep it or done with it” in my kids’ closets tonight. Basically, neither of them have worn pants since March. It turns out, 9 months of growing has reduced each of them to a single pair of pants. #pandemicparenting

On the subject of cameras=learning: while challenging, I believe ultimately, the most compassionate thing teachers can do is work unrelentingly to create a safe environment. For most Ss, cameras=compliance. Learning only happens if kids want to be there. Safe students can engage.
There is not much I feel in control of right now, but my amazing colleagues @cecil_tricia, @Temptress1980 & I launched an online teaching strategies class for our colleagues yesterday. Putting something out there that helps teachers (rather than demoralizes them) gives me peace.

Shout out to ALL humans for persevering right now. Today, I’m sending a special shout to all the “work outside the home” mothers whose husbands’ employers still expect them to work “9-5” during this nightmare (because those are “working hours”)...

...so you [women] get to raise and educate your children on your own while also working a full time job between lessons and meals. In this moment, we have an opportunity to stop and evaluate the systems we perpetuate that put people down...women, BIPOC, LGBTQ, and on and on...

We CAN do better...in our schools, our businesses, our government, our homes...BUT we need to STOP, LOOK, LISTEN, and face the truth. A lot of us have the luxury of being able to do that right now...let’s not squander it. Let’s listen, learn, and LEAN towards peace and justice.
