Without fans, we’re nothing.
I’ve always said that we succeed thanks to others. Fans share our work, support us financially, and make us known to the world. They help put a roof over our heads and food on our tables so we can keep doing what we love. Without them, we’d probably be doing a job we like less.
I understand that when you get big, you can’t answer everyone, and nobody technically owes anyone anything. But ignoring fans should be avoided. They should get a reply sooner or later, even a simple like to show you’ve seen the message and appreciate the support.
Some ask questions because they want to understand how we work, and others offer constructive criticism or compliments. When I have something to say, I answer. So if you want to message me, feel free. I’ll reply when I can, and I’m usually pretty quick since I don’t get as many messages as others. A year ago I was much less communicative, and now I’m more responsive.
Everyone handles this in their own way, but getting into the habit of replying to your own fans is a good one. It matters, because of the gratitude they bring you!
Feel free to stop reading here, the rest isn’t as important. Thanks for reading!
[Part 2]
Some people have told me that a lot of artists never reply or give any news, even to those who support them on Patreon or other paid platforms. I find that sad...
Spam is easy to spot and ignore. If someone just says “hi” with nothing else, I’ll answer that hi, but I’ll quickly end the conversation if the goal is only to become friends. I’m polite but direct: I’d rather give a clear answer than lie to myself or to others. I simply appreciate people who come with a question, an opinion or some feedback more than those who want a friendship, I don’t have the time for that right now.
Also, I’m sorry to anyone who sent me a real message that landed in spam. I don’t fully understand how X works, and sometimes I see the spam section and then can’t find it again. When I do find real messages in there, I reply and delete the actual spam.
Of course, some fans can be awful. Mine are lovely, so I can’t really compare. But I went through a lot when I was younger, and I learned to recognize someone who means harm. When a person only wants to hurt you, the best thing is to ignore them. If you don’t take their opinion into account, there’s no reason for your ego to be hurt, especially when their goal was never to help you improve, only to bring you down. People who need to put others down are usually unhappy themselves, and doing it to “feel better” isn’t the solution.
So keep that in mind when someone says things only to hurt you, and think more about the people who support you in your passion!
