I am begging Andy Burnham to read the Wolf Report.
Practical education is valuable. But Key Stage 4 (aged 14-16) is too young to start sorting children into 'academic' and 'vocational' tracks.
We learned this lesson in 2011 when Alison Wolf found that children from poor backgrounds were being funnelled into vocational qualifications which offered no progression on to further study and negligible employment opportunities.
Meanwhile, fewer than half of pupils leave Key Stage 4 with a strong pass in both English and Maths. This is the real barrier to employment. Not that teenagers didn't study 'business' or 'creative media' at 14.
Schools with a strong academic track record, and pupils with affluent parents, will avoid V Levels. They know they will soon be regarded as 'soft' by employers. But those already disadvantaged, or at underperforming schools will be pushed down a technical route. 14 year-olds who is struggling will be encouraged to take construction at GCSE rather than given extra maths tuition.
The V Levels experiment will probably be phased out in a decade. But it will leave thousands of children, from the most deprived backgrounds, with a set of qualifications they cannot leverage into a job or further study.
We've all heard someone say 'school wasn't really for me’.
And we should think about why that is. Our system is set up to reward young people who thrive in academic subjects and exams, but what about those who learn best by getting stuck in and doing things?
Too often they're left behind.
So we’re introducing new vocational GCSEs - proper, nationally recognised qualifications giving young people practical, hands-on learning that they can study alongside Maths, English and Science.
And we’re creating 200,000 more work experience opportunities, so every teenager gets the chance to experience the world of work before they leave school.
A one-size fits all approach simply doesn't work - I want to build an education system that values both academic and technical paths and gives all young people hope that their future will be brighter, whether it starts at university or not.

Refugee and disabled children will be removed from mainstream education in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt if the far-Right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party wins the imminent regional election.
The AfD’s manifesto sets out plans for a major educational overhaul, which would decrease the number of comprehensive schools in Saxony-Anhalt. It states that the “inclusion experiment has failed and must be ended” ⤵️
