Dear followers,
As of today, we will cease all activity on X. This applies to both our profiles HITStudies and SIMPLAIX. In future, we'll be sharing our news and events on BlueSky and we hope you will join us there at hitsters.bsky.social.

Why the Guardian is no longer posting on X theguardian.com/media/2024/n…
The 2025 HITS calendar is here with pictures of flowers, landscapes & special places at HITS. The theme centers around the vibrant colors of our garden, bringing a fresh, inspiring look to the year ahead! Let the calendar remind you of the colors surrounding us all year long.
We’ve reached the last calendar page for this year, and it's becoming more and more common to see our beloved HITS duck frozen up in the pond again. We're getting ready for the last events and duties this year before hanging up the new calendar. Stay warm!

🥳 Design proteins from scratch, with a good helix/sheet balance, quickly and robustly with fancy geometric algebra 🤓 that catches how proteins look like! Stellar team work by Leif, Simon, Seva @_ncyxx and Nico, wonderful @HITStudies Lab project with @JanStuehmer.
Generating Highly Designable Proteins with Geometric Algebra Flow Matching
1. This study introduces GAFL (Geometric Algebra Flow Matching), a cutting-edge generative model for protein backbone design that leverages projective geometric algebra (PGA) and Clifford Frame Attention (CFA) to enhance designability, diversity, and novelty of generated proteins.
2. GAFL’s innovation lies in Clifford Frame Attention (CFA), which extends the AlphaFold2 invariant point attention (IPA) mechanism, incorporating geometric features such as residue frames in projective geometric algebra to create expressive higher-order messages between residues.
3. Unlike traditional IPA, CFA allows GAFL to capture a more realistic secondary structure distribution, with an emphasis on balancing α-helices and β-sheets, matching the natural diversity found in proteins.
4. GAFL outperforms baselines like RFdiffusion, FrameDiff, and FoldFlow across metrics including designability, diversity, and novelty, particularly excelling in producing small, highly designable backbones with diverse secondary structures.
5. Benchmarking on protein datasets such as PDB and SCOPe shows GAFL’s capacity to generate diverse structures more efficiently, achieving high alignment with natural protein structural distributions.

November is here and so is the cold weather in Heidelberg. Small creatures are hiding under a blanket of autumn leaves, as might be this Flower Scarab. Though it’s rather uncommon to spot one this late in the year, with its shiny carapace it's a real jewel in the HITS garden.
Spooky spiders are up to mischief at HITS. Did you know that it’s considered good luck to see a spider on Halloween? Well, maybe you want to go outside and look for one, as there's nothing like a nice breath of fresh scare! Have a spooktacular night. Happy Halloween from HITS!
Today, we're at #Wissenswerte, THE forum for science journalism in the German-speaking world. If you're around, don’t miss our Science Insight at 4pm on Machine Learning & proteins by HITS researcher Leif Seute. Venue: @UniHeidelberg or stop by our booth on the top floor.
Yesterday, we hosted a group of enthusiastic young women at HITS from the Zukunfts-Orientierungs-Akademie (ZOrA) Heidelberg. The girls listened to scientific talks by our HITSters and had the chance to chat with them afterwards in a relaxed environment. What a great initiative!👍
Fotos ©HITS
Interested to know how Machine Learning and Astronomy go hand in hand? Watch yesterday’s HITS colloquium talk by Klaus Tschira Guest Professor @CabreraVives and tell us in the comments how well you did in the Galaxy Classification Crowdsourcing Experiment: youtube.com/watch?v=ojLK4-mD…
We thank Klaus Tschira Guest Professor @CabreraVives for a brilliant talk at today's colloquium. He spoke about what ML-based systems need to consider regarding real data and interactively explained how galaxies are classified. Stay tuned for the recording on our YouTube channel!
