Abusers of any kind will always put the blame on anyone else. It's kinda sad that so many fell for the lies of a scammer or, better, a group of scammers who point in the direction of Google docs when it's more than obvious that 15+ million stories can't impossibly be "handpicked§" from whatever sites. This was a massive breach into the archive by using whatever backdoor that was left open accidentially. Also stop blaming any ethnicity for this scam. Do you really believe a 17 year old named "Ganesh" is a responsible for the whole mess? Don't be so gullible! This whole thing has caused enough harm already. Instead of standing united, people let these morons divide us further and sow mistrust and h@te among writers by slinging around baseless accusations. Sorry, to chime in. The breach didn't happen that long ago. As someone who ran a forum and has blogs online, rest assured that AO3 runs several back up servers. In case the main server goes down they do back ups regularly. These backups are stored on a backup server or servers as the amount of data is immens. To me, this looks like someone succeeded in breaching one of the backup servers and syphoned like crazy. Once they find a point of entry it's easy to drain the server from there. Even if the stories were deleted AO3 will have backups form back in the day. No idea how far back they go with their storage but it must be years. And I doubt if you delete a story later that they go and also delete it from their backup. That also explains the stories that have been orphaned later in time still carrying the username. Or older usernames. Backups stay untouched from changes.

As soon as the archive is back, I suggest to switch to a new email address and PW, anyway. Better being safe than sorry.

Who really believes only one word of it? As someone who ran a multi fandom forum (long before social media became a thing), for years, with about 1.000 users, covering a ton of shows, hosting fanart and fanfiction alike and therefore dealing with a ton of traffic, never charged a single dime from anyone. I ran the site but I had also a team, at its peak I had a team of 5 mods, updating and overseeing things. Also my BF did the technical part, regular maintenance, etc. This so called excuse is bullshit at best. The traffic the download and upload of 15+ million stories is causing is immense. Then turning it into audiobooks. Let alone hosting all that... And we should believe a teenager ran that?? Gimme a break, this borders on organized crime. And we should all be aware that this site may be gone but that doesn't mean it's not popping up under a different domain name or has already existed in the shadows for some time. Don't let yourself be fooled by this trash excuse. That was not a one man show. Only the pressure and uproar this whole scam caused was too massive to let it slip. Thanks to those who brought it to our attention. This showed how vulnerable things are and that nothing is really safe once it's uploaded to the net. They also might have pulled out because they realized that they couldn't get any more stuff from the site after syphoning it because their breach was detected and they were cut off from the system entirely. Being greedy on all levels didn't pay up in the end. Oh, 11 e-books wouldn't nearly cover the costs. What a fraud. #ao3life #ao3 #ao3writer
