How do crews operate a hydrogen-powered fishing vessel safely?
H2-SEAS training covers fuel cells, vessel operation, refuelling and emergency response. Online theory is complemented by practical exercises.

Three decades of policy have worked: nitrogen inputs to Europe's seas are down 25–30%, phosphorus by about 40%.
Recovery is still uneven. Legacy nutrients in sediments keep feeding the system from its own past.

Underwater noise is invisible, and one of the fastest-growing pressures on European seas.
Shipping, pile driving, dredging and sonar mask the sound marine life navigates by.
Which is why quieter propulsion is an environmental measure. Topic 5:

Over 70% of marine litter never starts at sea. It starts on land.
Plastics reach the coast, fragment, and enter the food web as microplastics — which
> also adsorb PCBs and PAHs and carry them up through it.
The Baltic acts as a sink. Topic 4:

Stopping the emission is not the same as ending the pollution.
Heavy metals, POPs, PAHs, PFAS settle into sediments and keep releasing for decades.
The Baltic accumulates them. The North Sea spreads them.
Dilution is not elimination. Topic 3:

Eutrophication is not "too much algae". It is a loop.
Nutrients in → blooms → light cut off → decay eats the oxygen.
Then low-oxygen sediment releases stored phosphorus, feeding the next bloom — and why the Baltic recovers so slowly. Topic 2:

The North Sea is open to the Atlantic: strong tides, constant mixing, pollution disperses.
The Baltic is semi-enclosed: brackish, stratified, slow to exchange - so it accumulates instead.
That difference decides almost everything else. Topic 1:

H2-SEAS has published its first online course, free and open to all.
"Green Energy & Marine Ecology Basics" — nine lessons on the Baltic and North Sea: eutrophication, hazardous substances, litter, underwater noise, HELCOM, OSPAR.

We represented H2-SEAS at the CINEA Feedback to Policy Workshop in Brussels on fisheries energy transition.
Sharing implementation insights, barriers and recommendations to help shape future EU initiatives.

H2-SEAS has reached a key milestone with the completion of its mid-term review meeting with external reviewers.
The consortium presented progress across all work packages and outlined the status of ongoing activities as the project moves into its next phase. #H2SEAS #CleanEnergy
RTU lead researcher Iveta Daugule participated with a paper “Green Technologies for Safer Seas: Addressing Excessive Noise to Enhance Safety in the Fishing Sector” at SWS Green Science for Green Life 2025, also chairing a poster session advancing safer, greener maritime solutions
EU just approved 235 cross-border energy projects, including 100 hydrogen & electrolyser initiatives. Plan is to build the ~€1.5 trillion infrastructure by 2040. #Hydrogen #EnergyTransition #EU #H2 #CleanEnergy

The H2-SEAS prototype is taking shape. The aluminum hull and internal structure are now in place. This is another step toward a zero-emission fishing vessel for the Baltic Sea. More progress updates will follow soon. #H2SEAS #Hydrogen #ZeroEmission
We joined the 6th Baltic Sea Fisheries Forum in Tallinn to present H2-SEAS and its hydrogen-electric vessel concept for small-scale fisheries. A great platform for collaboration and innovation.

To build synergies, we joined the REFEST meeting to explore retrofitting ideas for greener small-scale fishing fleets, from hull design to hybrid drives and PV. A good match with H2-SEAS and our mission to decarbonise coastal fisheries.
