Postdischarge nausea and vomiting negatively impact recovery after surgery. A new article by Guzzi et al. evaluated the effect of a small, preoperative dose of olanzapine on quality of recovery after ambulatory surgery.

Excited to share "Preoperative Olanzapine and Quality of Recovery after Ambulatory Surgery: A Randomized Clinical Trial" -- out now in @_Anesthesiology!
Bottom line: for high risk patients, 5 mg pre-op olanzapine + standard prophylaxis = improved quality of recovery and ↓ PDNV
Olanzapine is cheap, well-tolerated, and widely available commercially, though often understocked in perioperative environments.
