The British Empire around 1833 Was the seizure of the Malvinas Islands an isolated event? Look at what Britain was doing around the world: 🇮🇳 1803 – Maratha territories — war and territorial conquest 🇿🇦 1806 – Cape Colony — invaded and captured 🇦🇷 1806 – Buenos Aires — invaded and captured; subsequently retaken by local forces 🇩🇰 1807 – Copenhagen — attacked; Danish fleet seized 🇺🇾 1807 – Montevideo — invaded and captured 🇦🇷 1807 – Buenos Aires — invaded again; the second British attempt was defeated and the British forces surrendered. 🇲🇶 1809 – Martinique — invaded and captured 🇬🇵 1810 – Guadeloupe — invaded and captured 🇷🇪 1810 – Réunion — invaded and captured 🇲🇺 1810 – Mauritius — invaded and captured 🇮🇩 1811 – Java — invaded and occupied 🇺🇸 1812–15 – United States — invaded; Washington captured and burned 🇳🇵 1814–16 – Nepal — invaded; territory ceded 🇮🇳 1817–18 – Maratha territories — conquered; British control massively expanded 🇦🇪 1819 – Ras Al Khaimah — attacked and captured 🇲🇲 1824–26 – Burma — invaded; territories ceded 🇬🇶 1827–34 – Fernando Po — British occupation/presence 🇦🇷 1833 – Malvinas Islands — Argentinians were removed and British administration established 🇮🇳 1834 – Coorg — invaded and annexed 🇿🇦 1834–35 – Xhosa territory — invaded; Queen Adelaide Province proclaimed 🇾🇪 1839 – Aden — attacked and captured 🇦🇫 1839 – Afghanistan — invaded; Kabul occupied 🇨🇳 1839 – China — First Opium War begins And we are supposed to believe that what happened in the South Atlantic in 1833 should be understood completely outside this context? Britain was one of the world’s dominant imperial powers and was repeatedly using military force to acquire, occupy or control territory during this period. 1833 wasn’t happening in a vacuum. It was happening in the age of the British Empire.

Donald Trump, whose war on Iran is the greatest strategic blunder in United States history, is not responsible for triggering the decline of the American empire, but he is responsible for its fatal denouement. This is the end. U.S. bases in the oil-rich Persian Gulf have been damaged or destroyed and I expect will not be rebuilt. Our allies, even those in Europe, are abandoning us. The decadence and immorality of American society, embodied in the vulgarity, stupefying ignorance and cruelty of Trump, are the defining characteristics of the Empire. The Global South, horrified at the Empire’s flagrant disregard for international humanitarian law, including the enabling of genocide in Gaza, sees us as the enemy. Abu Ghraib Prison may have receded from our consciousness, but for the rest of the world, its images of U.S. soldiers and contractors sadistically humiliating and torturing imprisoned Iraqis has replaced the Disneyfied version of America we once exported. The war on Iran, which has disrupted the world’s oil supply, is rapidly pushing the global economy over the cliff. We are going down. And we will bring many with us. Osama Bin Laden may be in a watery grave in the North Arabian Sea. Al-Qaeda may be a shadow of itself. But Bin Laden’s most fervent dreams have been realized in the last twenty-five years of gross miscalculations of the Empire — its squandering of trillions of dollars on military debacles and the ascendancy of our version of Ubu Roi, Donald J. Trump. Read my full column, 'Osama Bin Trump' on Substack at the link below.

Remember when the Panama Papers came out, revealed that all rich people in the world are part of enormous criminal network to dodge taxes and hoard stolen wealth in offshore accounts, and the journalist who reported was murdered by a car bomb, and no one was held accountable, and literally nothing happened. Remember that there are 3 million files of documented evidence about powerful men and women who raped, cannibalized, trafficked, filmed, terrorized, tortured, hunted, and murdered 13, 14, 15 year children, and no one was held accountable, and literally nothing happened. Remember that the United States literally kidnapped a sitting president of a foreign country and his wife and they’ve just been sitting in jail for the past 6 months, and no one was held accountable, and literally nothing happened. Remember that there are two genocides—one in Gaza and the other in Lebanon—and that there are arrest warrants for war crimes and crimes against humanity, and no one was held accountable, and literally nothing happened. Remember that the US military bombed a school in Iran, killed 168 schoolgirls, and no one was held accountable, and literally nothing happened. Remember that there are hundreds of terrorist settlers terrorizing the West Bank and burning people's homes while families and children are asleep inside, and no one was held accountable, and literally nothing happened. Remember that the US is starving and killing babies in Cuba, blocking 7,000 containers of medicine, food, and power from reaching Cuba, and no one was held accountable, and literally nothing happened. This is what will happen—and continue to happen—if we do not unite to enforce international law.

I've lived in Argentina for over 18 years. I'm a migrant here. And I want to say it clearly: Samuel L. Jackson's accusation is false. I'm not speaking from theory. I'm speaking from the experience of having built a life here, of having been welcomed, integrated, of having seen firsthand what it means to be a country made of migrants. Let's go over some history, since he brought it up: 🇦🇷 Argentina abolished slavery in 1813 with the Free Womb Law, and definitively in the 1853 Constitution — earlier than much of the continent. This is a country built by receiving waves of immigrants from Italy, Spain, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and today from all over Latin America. Multiculturalism isn't a talking point here, it's the foundation of national identity. 🇺🇸 The United States didn't abolish slavery until 1865, and upheld legal racial segregation (Jim Crow laws) until 1964-65. Less than 65 years ago, that same country had separate bathrooms, schools, and bus seats by skin color. 🇬🇧 England built much of its economic power on the transatlantic slave trade, and its colonial empire left a record of institutional racism across four continents that's still being reckoned with today. Before pointing fingers, it might be worth looking at your own history. Argentina has its own unresolved issues, like any country — but calling it "the most racist country in the world" isn't criticism, it's misinformation. You should be ashamed @SamuelLJackson #Argentina #FakeNews #SamuelLJackson #Migrants #ArgentineHistory
