The reason nice neighborhoods are nice is because they're full of nice people.
Using longitudinal data, we can see that they don't make people nice: moving into good or bad neighborhoods doesn't affect the risk of criminal offending.
But bad people tend to live in bad places.

1908 Rolls-Royce 40/50 HP Silver Ghost Tourer
British automotive luxury reached a defining moment when Rolls-Royce introduced its 40/50 HP model in 1906, with production beginning in 1907. The “Silver Ghost” name originally belonged to a specific 1907 demonstration car, registered AX 201, before becoming associated with the entire model range.
The early “parallel bonnet” examples are distinguished by their distinctive front-end styling that set them apart from later variants.
The 1908 Silver Ghost featured a substantial 7,036 cc (429 cu in) side-valve inline six-cylinder engine producing approximately 48 horsepower, paired with a single carburetor and three-speed manual transmission. Its 135.5-inch wheelbase provided an imposing presence on the road while accommodating luxurious coachwork from prestigious firms like Wilkinson, Barker, and H.J. Mulliner.
Engineering highlights included a solid front axle and a live rear axle with leaf-spring suspension. Rear-wheel mechanical drum brakes and a separate transmission brake provided stopping power appropriate for the era.
The combination of advanced engineering and handcrafted construction established Rolls-Royce’s reputation for producing “the best car in the world,” with many examples surviving today as treasured collector vehicles.

On October 19, 1950, UN troops took Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea.
Four months earlier, Kim Il Sung's army had stormed into Seoul. Now his own capital was in enemy hands, and Kim was gone, fled north toward the Chinese border.
The South Korean 1st Division, under Paik Sun-yup, fought its way into the heart of the city. The US 1st Cavalry Division came in from the south. American, South Korean, and British troops walked through Kim's government buildings, past giant portraits of Kim and Stalin, and found offices abandoned in a hurry.
It was the first time in history that American forces had captured a communist capital.
The mood was electric. Soldiers believed the war was basically over. Mop up the rest of the North Korean army, reach the Yalu, and be home for Christmas.
Within days, Bob Hope was in Pyongyang putting on a show for the troops.
What almost nobody knew was what was happening at that exact moment about 100 miles to the north.
That same night, hundreds of thousands of Chinese soldiers began crossing the Yalu River.
The UN would hold Pyongyang for about six weeks.

Genghis Khan’s genetic legacy may extend to millions of men across Asia.
In 2003, researchers published a remarkable study revealing that approximately 8% of men across a large region of Asia shared a particular Y-chromosome lineage. Based on its distribution, the researchers estimated that around 16 million men at the time might have carried it.
The lineage was found across Mongolia, China and several parts of Central Asia, regions shaped by the expansion of the Mongol Empire during the 13th century.
Researchers proposed that this genetic pattern may have originated with Genghis Khan or his close male-line relatives. His dynasty’s power, social status and reproductive success could have helped spread the lineage across generations.
What fascinates me most is how a genetic signature can preserve clues about the rise of an empire long after its political power has disappeared.
However, there is an important distinction: the study did not establish that all these men were direct descendants of Genghis Khan. The precise origin of the lineage remains uncertain.
History is not preserved only in monuments and manuscripts. Sometimes, its traces survive in human DNA.

The past few days, I got my hands on thousands of new transcripts and hundreds of recordings, thanks to leads from @SKDoubleDub33 and @iamlisalogan .
You've heard that the DSA is proposing structural reforms to America, including abolishing the Senate and imposing term limits.
What you not have heard is - there is an operational plan to put it all into action. If the Democratic Party sweeps 2026, then DSA will become "foot soldiers" in constant clashes with the administration to cross a "red line" or invoke a "doomsday scenario" - meaning, President Trump invokes the Insurrection Act, probably sometime in 2027.
Then, a lot of coordinated responses kick off, including delegitimizing the federal government itself and handing that legitimacy to Democratic governors. 2028 then becomes a vote on whether to keep America governance as-is or to burn it all down to appease a "young and brown" demographic.
The mysterious group who's been coordinating 50501, Indivisible, and coordinating the NoKings protests is called "United Democracy Alliance" and their intellectual leader is Erica Chenoweth who came up with the 3.5% rule of nonviolent regime change.
Patience. I know I've hyped this more than anything else. It's genuinely the biggest discovery I've had. This is an enormous archive. This is only the beginning.

The best journo / writer covering the Birchmore case.
I have been covering the Sandra Birchmore case since late 2023, digging into the Massachusetts State Police records and talking to my long time sources about Stoughton cops Matthew Farwell, his twin brother William, and their friend Robert Devine. At that time, those Stoughton cops had been pushed off the force and publicly disgraced by the IAD report commissioned by Stoughton PD Deputy Chief Brian Holmes, details of which were released by an apoplectic Chief Donna McNamara at a 2022 press conference. Holmes is now the Kingston PD Chief and McNamara is on administrative leave, suing the town saying she was removed because of the Sandra Birchmore case and the "current and former cops" under FBI investigation.
I heard the allegations regarding an encounter Sandra had with Joshua Heal, the animal control officer in the Stoughton animal shelter, purportedly for a cat adoption, and Matt Farwell tutoring her in the town library - two public buildings where Sandra was allegedly abused. Matthew Farwell, we learned last week, was a high school dropout who got "a lot of Fs," in testimony from FBI Special Agent Heidi Kelsch. A transcript of those Stoughton High School Fs were entered into evidence, which led a federal prosecutor to ask the FBI agent if she thought Farwell was an appropriate tutor, and titters in Courtroom 11 at the Moakley federal courthouse. The lead investigator in Sandra Birchmore's case, Lt. John Fanning, is also a Stoughton High School alum.
And I learned the name of the military member, a U.S. Army recruiter in Quincy, mentioned in the Stoughton IAD report, who investigators noted appeared in sexually explicit videos with Sandra recovered from the Farwell brothers. My sources have confirmed that man is Jason Pickard, whose name was also referenced in an open court hearing by Matthew Farwell's federal public defenders. William Farwell and Jason Pickard are on the government's witness list. So is Joshua Heal.
Pickard and William Farwell were in the same National Guard unit. Last week Chief Holmes testified that he turned the IAD report over to the FBI, the Norfolk County District Attorney's Office, and a U.S. Army Lt. Colonel. Back then I heard about some cops who tried to "do the right thing," and push for charges, but was shut down by top officials in the Norfolk County DA's Office.
But the FBI did not shut him down, and soon uncovered additional evidence..
In August 2024, Farwell was pulled out of a big rig in a Revere, MA, the truck he had been driving since the end of his police career, by the FBI. One of his three children, a son, was in the truck when his dad was arrested and accused of the crime of statutory rape and the murder of Sandra Birchmore. Later, he was was also charged with the death of her unborn baby, a boy.
Kelsch read a slew of graphic text messages for jurors on Friday. According to the reports I have read, these text messages are going to get much, much worse.
Follow @LAmag for updates. LA Mag True Crime Instagram for videos from outside the courthouse. I suspect this verdict in Farwell's going federal trial will not be the end of this case.
