How about policy ideas that don’t default to tax the rich? Can we not be even a bit creative??
So you want to “tax the rich”, do ya?
The LA “Mansion Tax” in its first 3 years has resulted in:
* a revenue DECREASE of $452 million
* 9100 new home constructions blocked (1000 of which were “affordable housing”)
* 16,650 full time construction jobs lost
Builders and developers take note.

There are valid points of criticism here for sure but a) you’re not controlling for market conditions here in terms of starts and b) there’s quite a bit of technology progress that is crucial to medium term productivity gains…we’re not going to flip a switch and turn on factories…have to start somewhere.
You know what they say about necessity and innovation….

The Globe and Mail asked a bunch of policy wonks for their ideas to improve our tax system. Mine: A "like-kind exchange" to get new rental apartments built in Canada rather than the US.

Breaking: Newly found data shows greedy U.S. developers began hoarding completed homes in 2006, and hoarded twice as many by 2007.
Strange that they decided to get greedy right as buyers disappeared.
All they needed was the Eby unsold condo tax and we could've avoided the Global Financial Crisis. Can't believe policy makers never thought of that.
Both sides of this pivot make zero sense. #wecandobetter

We need to rethink the supply chain urgently
This is a social crisis unfolding in slow motion. The answer will come from technology. Perhaps we can start prioritizing housing innovation vs AI apps that evaluate the effectiveness of AI apps?

This is really smart. The federal government is now allowing full capital expensing on 2/3rds of capital investments by businesses to incentivize investing back into companies, rather than sitting on dead money.

Buying a house that faces the right way is an absolute game changer.
We wanted:
- big windows in our kitchen/great room and clear space facing east to catch the sunrise when we wake up
- big windows in the bedrooms facing west to catch the sunset
- a back deck in the east so when the sun was hot in the afternoon we would have shade
It all worked out perfectly. Think about these things before you buy. Simple stuff that makes a huge difference.

So we are funding AI to oversee how AI agents work with existing software but we cant build homes people can afford? 🤯. Brilliant SF minds need to reprioritize.

Of all the issues @Arnold_Ventures works on, increasing the supply of housing is in the most demand. It's also the area where we see the most bipartisan collaboration, both in states and Congress.
