It then applied this model to look into 2.65 million original cancer research papers published between 1999 and 2024. It flagged 261,245 papers as fake - Over 178,000 flagged papers had Chinese institutional affiliations - Roughly 36% of Chinese cancer research output in the dataset - Iran was next at around 20% This is a major problem because this can mean the medical community amplifies completely fake research and findings “Every fabricated study sitting in a real journal is competing for attention with studies actually pointing towards a legit cure, which means the more fake noise there is, the longer it takes for the real breakthroughs to surface. And somewhere in that pile, maybe a real cure is buried under a fake AI-generated one.” No doctors have gone to jail for this (I checked)

Fine: $160 million. About $200 billion ran through a single Danske Bank branch in Estonia, much of it suspicious. Pleaded guilty. BNP Paribas moved $8.8 billion for Sudan, Iran and Cuba. Pleaded guilty. Standard Chartered was accused of hiding $250 billion in Iran deals from New York regulators. Settled. Deutsche Bank let $10 billion slip out of Russia through "mirror trades". HSBC moved at least $881 million in drug money. JPMorgan kept Jeffrey Epstein as a client until 2013, five years after his conviction. It reported over $1 billion of his transactions as suspicious. A month after he died. And this Tuesday, Bank of America admitted it willfully broke anti-money laundering law. Over $5 billion in suspicious transactions it didn't report on time. Treasury says it "prioritized its revenues." Fine: $1.2 billion. Profit that quarter: $6.9 billion. The US Attorney General said it out loud in 2013.
