How many butterflies can you count?

Did you know that not all Bee Orchids (Ophrys species) mimic bees?
Meet Ophrys blitopertha, a unique Mediterranean orchid pollinated by a Scarab Beetle (Blitopertha lineolata).
These photos, captured in Rhodes, Greece, show this remarkable relationship in action!
🌸 Despite heavy rain, our Crete group added Colchicum macrophyllum & C. balansae today. First recorded on Crete in 2022, C. balansae is known from just one location. Thanks to our local botanical contacts for sharing the site with us 🙏

🌿 Two special finds on our Crete holiday today: Biarum davisii, a rare Cretan endemic, and Muscari parviflorum, the Autumn Grape Hyacinth — very rare on the island.
Join us in April or May 2027 to discover Crete’s spring orchids, and its later mountain blooms!
🌸 Day 1 of our Crete in Autumn tour, exploring the White Mountains!
Today’s highlights included: Crocus pumilus, Colchicum cretense, Allium tardans and Narcissus obsoletus. The first three are endemic, thus grow naturally nowhere else but Crete.
A lovely start to our week!
A blast of colour from Bolivia for #SkipperSaturday
There's about 3,500 members of the Hesperiidae family of butterflies. Here's a few of them, photographed today by one of our guides that we felt were worth sharing.
86 Great Bustards and 166,000 Common Cranes on Day 1 of our Hungarian autumn tour.
Watching thousands of cranes come in to roost across the Puszta never gets old. A fine & fulfilling start for our guests! 🇭🇺🪶
Bringing some mesmerizing nature to your Friday feed! 🇧🇹💧
Our local guide in Bhutan captured this beautiful video of a dragonfly laying her eggs in a mountain stream.
Have a wonderful weekend!

🦋 Why do butterflies gather on damp ground?
Mud-puddling allows butterflies to take up moisture, salts & other nutrients.
Sometimes hundreds gather together - spectacular behaviour we’re fortunate to encounter on many of our Greenwings butterfly holidays.
🌿 Greenwings Guest Gallery
A new regular feature sharing some of the wonderful wildlife photographed by guests on our holidays.
First up: a male Meleager’s Blue (Polyommatus daphnis), photographed by Gillian E. in Romania, June 2026. 🦋
🦋 There’s more to a butterfly than the butterfly!
On Greenwings holidays, our guides look beyond the adults to find caterpillars, food plants and other life stages, revealing more about their ecology to our guests.
Apollo (Parnassius apollo), Italian Alps 🇮🇹
🦋 The False Apollo (Archon apollinus) is one of Europe’s rarest & most beautiful butterflies.
The photos show eggs (laid on Aristolochia), the striking caterpillar, and both sexes of the adult (female top, male bottom).
📸 All taken on our spring holiday in northern Greece.

Moths can be as colourful as butterflies. This one flew into our kitchen before being carefully escorted back out.
