I’d say my forest garden is now entirely self-mulching, yes? I’m a proud dad ☀️🍂🍁

Got a gardening gig at a very wealthy economists house. Made the mistake of using the phrase “wildlife attracting,” and in a moment of weakness saying “after all, human economy is only a subset of ecology, the household of nature.” Received email politely firing me next day.

key point: if we eliminate work that is socially/ecologically harmful & unsustainable (priv health ins paperpushing, oil/gas, fast fashion, beef production, much speculation), that frees people to do other work we need done.
Replying to @joshischillin
And yes, this is very possible. Most jobs we have now actually aren’t necessary for society and are bureaucratic busy work. Most jobs we actually need, we don’t invest in. We have the population to fill all these jobs while providing people with everything I just mentioned.

For all the terrible environmental news we hear every day, here’s something genuinely encouraging. A new UN report says 623 MILLION acres of forests, oceans, wetlands, and other ecosystems are being restored across 149 countries. That’s an area roughly the size of Kazakhstan. Maybe we should talk more about the things humanity is actually getting right.

Katherine Rundell; this is precisely why powerful companies are investing billions to ensure that humans never dream again.

This is downstream of the duopoly problem. And it undermines a lot of work attempt to build alternative outcomes that are lasting and actually helpful.
Actual results aside, it does not seem healthy for a country to swing to radically every two years. Horrendous for any long-term policy.

I believe that another one of the greatest lies still being told today is that mechanized, petrol-based agriculture is necessary to grow enough food to feed the population. I always tell people that there is enough scientific proof that small vegetable gardens (750-1000 m² or 8000-10750 square feet) are much more productive than any highly technological field. Plus, permanent tree crops outperform even corn in terms of productivity! Last but not least, if you want to enjoy grains, like rice, wheat, and barley, plant them following Fukuoka’s method. So, we can save the world by home gardening, planting food forests, and growing “Fukuoka grains”. That’s the craft of permaculture.

🎥 @abelferrod 💻 @CorbierEmilien

Economic populism also means dethroning economics. It’s not the job of economists to dictate how our economies should be run but to find solutions to implement democratically determined goals.

If they could, trees would be screaming this message—but instead they're showing us—unmistakably—how we're messing up the natural world. This summer's intense and prolonged heat in the UK drove trees into dormancy, but in November, trees are showing us their spring flowers, six months early. Kew Gardens and the Woodland Trust are very concerned how this will affect pollinators and the trees' health. Kevin Martin, head of tree collections at Kew said: "They won’t have those buds again in the spring." He said the true impact of this won't be known until spring 2028.
