🔥Time for a new Troika — headed by Athens — to supervise the German economy? 🎇 Revenge is rarely elegant. It is, however, educational. The version by Zerohedge : “Revenge is sweet. It tastes all the sweeter the longer one has had to wait for it to arrive, and the deeper the pain of the humiliation that preceded it.” 🙂 Fifteen years ago the script was simple. Greece was the sinner. Cyprus was the cautionary tale. Northern Europe, led by Berlin, was the priest. Wolfgang Schäuble flew into Athens to lecture a country already on its knees, floated Grexit, and helped impose a programme of asset sales, pension cuts, hospital closures and mass unemployment under the threat that Europe would otherwise let the whole thing collapse. The same moral theatre was then staged in Nicosia: a depositor “haircut,” banks treated as laboratories, and another small country forced to swallow medicine that the authors of the recipe never intended to taste themselves. It was convenient. It turned a euro-design crisis, reckless bank lending and cheap German-financed credit into a morality play about “spendthrifts” and “lazy Southerners.” German banks and insurers had tens of billions in Greek paper. Taxpayers later underwrote the cleanup. The humiliation was public. The sermons were endless. The Schwarze Null ( “black zero.” that a federal budget that ends the year with no new net debt), was sacred — for others. Now the plot has inverted just enough to sting. Greece cut its debt ratio from crisis peaks near 180 percent toward the mid-140s, runs primary surpluses, and grows faster than the euro-area average after a decade of pain. Its finance minister, Kyriakos Pierrakakis — also president of the Eurogroup — tells Handelsblatt, with exquisite politeness, that fiscal reform hurts first and pays later. He even calls Germany the industrial locomotive of Europe. That is not flattery. That is a diagnosis delivered with a straight face. Meanwhile Berlin, under Friedrich Merz, has rewritten the debt-brake religion it once exported. Defence and infrastructure special funds, deficits heading well above the old sermons, new borrowing measured in the hundreds of billions, and the same capital that once wagged its finger now discovering that deindustrialisation, energy costs, an ageing welfare state and military rearmament do not fit inside a Swabian housekeeping booklet. The country that once treated 0.35 percent debt on GDP,as theology now lives on exceptions. So the question is not whether Germany is Greece. It is not. Its debt ratio is still far lower. The question is whether Europe is allowed one set of rules for the weak and another for the self-appointed virtuous. If the 2010s logic still holds — that fiscal sinners require external supervision, asset inventories, quarterly inspections and a Troika of the unembarrassed — then consistency would require a new mission. Athens has the recent experience. Nicosia remembers the banking haircut. Perhaps they should send the questionnaires this time: how many unused industrial sites, how many off-balance-sheet promises, how much moral capital remains after the lectures. A Greek-led Troika for Berlin is satire. The original one was not.
