Keeping it legal to sell ever-more-powerful #slaughterbots globally is such a dumb idea that most nations are discussing a treaty in Vienna today. I love Jaan Tallinn's opening speech: #AWS2024Vienna

Conventional medicine tells you "there is no known cause"... they tell you "there isn't anything you can DO"... "it's just your genetics"... but they are wrong. This takes the power away from YOU and gives it to them and to the meds they prescribe to MANAGE SYMPTOMS.

Numbers. They are the most powerful thing in the universe. They predict everything.
Mathematics. I've always found this finding to be interesting. You too? (Perhaps this mystery has since been solved to Inder's satisfaction.) Source (Inder J. Taneja, @IJTANEJA): arxiv.org/abs/1302.1479

If you think OpenAI Sora is a creative toy like DALLE, ... think again. Sora is a data-driven physics engine. It is a simulation of many worlds, real or fantastical. The simulator learns intricate rendering, "intuitive" physics, long-horizon reasoning, and semantic grounding, all by some denoising and gradient maths. I won't be surprised if Sora is trained on lots of synthetic data using Unreal Engine 5. It has to be! Let's breakdown the following video. Prompt: "Photorealistic closeup video of two pirate ships battling each other as they sail inside a cup of coffee." - The simulator instantiates two exquisite 3D assets: pirate ships with different decorations. Sora has to solve text-to-3D implicitly in its latent space. - The 3D objects are consistently animated as they sail and avoid each other's paths. - Fluid dynamics of the coffee, even the foams that form around the ships. Fluid simulation is an entire sub-field of computer graphics, which traditionally requires very complex algorithms and equations. - Photorealism, almost like rendering with raytracing. - The simulator takes into account the small size of the cup compared to oceans, and applies tilt-shift photography to give a "minuscule" vibe. - The semantics of the scene does not exist in the real world, but the engine still implements the correct physical rules that we expect. Next up: add more modalities and conditioning, then we have a full data-driven UE that will replace all the hand-engineered graphics pipelines. openai.com/sora

Instead of using an alarm to wake up, I put my chicken lamp incandescent on an analog outlet timer that costs like $5 and it effectively serves as a sunlight alarm in the morning. It has not failed to wake me for 6 months now. I wake up so calmly.

Nikola Tesla's prediction of a smartphone, Collier’s magazine interview, 1926: "When wireless is perfectly applied the whole earth will be converted into a huge brain, which in fact it is, all things being particles of a real and rhythmic whole. We shall be able to communicate with one another instantly, irrespective of distance. Not only this, but through television and telephony we shall see and hear one another as perfectly as though we were face to face, despite intervening distances of thousands of miles; and the instruments through which we shall be able to do his will be amazingly simple compared with our present telephone. A man will be able to carry one in his vest pocket."

Doctors at a hospital in Texas informed George Pickering that his son was in a state of brain death. They explained that his son showed "no brain activity" and the decision had been made to remove life support. Pickering, however, was unconvinced by their assessment and resorted to extreme measures by drawing a firearm. He demanded that the doctors continue their efforts to save his son's life, threatening to use the gun if they refused. This situation escalated into a tense standoff lasting three hours, during which Pickering faced off against the police while the medical team performed additional tests on his son. The hospital was secured under lockdown as police negotiators tried to reason with Pickering, who remained adamant. In a pivotal moment, Pickering's son, previously declared braindead, responded to his father's request to squeeze his hand, indicating cognitive presence. Following this revelation, Pickering peacefully surrendered to the authorities. George Pickering II subsequently served a prison sentence of 11 months. Remarkably, his son experienced a complete recovery.

From the 1950s to 2015, world plastic production grew more than 200x. Annual volume jumped from 1.5 million tons to over 7.8 billion tons — that’s over 1 ton per human being alive on the planet today, with 59% of this total coming from consumer products and packaging.

This is the first image captured of Chernobyl, taken 14 hours after the explosion on April 26, 1986. The photo was snapped from a helicopter assessing radiation levels over the disaster area. The image is grainy due to the intense radiation in the air, which began damaging the camera film as soon as it was exposed. Igor Kostin, the photographer, found that the radiation affected his camera's motors after about 20 photos. When he processed his films, only the image above was usable. All other photos, affected by high radiation levels, came out completely black. Kostin's visit to Chernobyl was not legal or approved by the authorities. The incident's news was largely hidden. However, Kostin was later given permission to photograph the disaster site, the evacuation of residents in Pripyat, and the 30 km zone around the power plant. His images helped reveal the catastrophe to the world. Despite his closeness to the site, Kostin did not receive deadly amounts of radiation. He died in a car crash in 2015 when he was 78.
