At Great Minds in STEM, creating meaningful STEM experiences takes passionate individuals who are willing to lead, innovate, and bring new ideas to life. As we reflect on the 38th Annual GMiS Conference, we want to recognize two individuals whose contributions helped make this year’s competitions special.
Sonia Martinez — Thank you for leading this year’s College Bowl and bringing students together for a competition that celebrated STEM knowledge, teamwork, and friendly rivalry. Your leadership helped create an opportunity for students to challenge themselves, showcase their skills, and connect through their shared passion for STEM.
Eric McConkey — Alongside his team, Eric brought something new to GMiS by creating and launching the first-ever Venture Bot Competition at a GMiS Conference! Thank you for turning your team’s vision into an exciting opportunity for students to explore robotics, creativity, collaboration, and real-world problem-solving.
Sonia and Eric, your leadership reflects what GMiS is all about: creating opportunities for students to discover their potential, push boundaries, and explore new possibilities in STEM.
Thank you for your vision, dedication, and commitment to our students. Your contributions are helping shape the future of STEM engagement at GMiS, and we’re excited to see what comes next!

The David Burris Tribute Award honors the College Bowl coach whose passion, dedication, and mentorship have made the most profound and lasting impact on students—inspiring them to realize their potential, build confidence, and embrace the power of teamwork.
Named in memory of the late David Burris, who coached the CIA’s College Bowl team for many years, the award celebrates his enduring legacy and the countless hours he devoted to encouraging, motivating, and empowering students across generations of GMiS conferences.
This year’s recipient was Oscar Cerón!
What makes the GMiS College Bowl special isn't just the competition itself, but the people who come together to make it an experience worth remembering.
As we continue our College Bowl volunteer recognition series, we're excited to celebrate four more dedicated coaches from the 38th Annual GMiS Conference: Rigoberto Lopez, Juan Duran, Hector Mendoza, and GMiS Board Member Tony Padilla.
Every successful program requires individuals who are willing to step forward, take on responsibilities, and contribute to something bigger than themselves. These coaches did just that, bringing their professional experience, enthusiasm, and commitment to supporting an environment where students could thrive.
Their participation is a reminder that meaningful student experiences are built through the collective efforts of professionals who believe in the importance of giving back. It's this spirit of service and collaboration that allows GMiS to continue creating opportunities for students year after year.
