The announcement of a Forensic Audit into the Governance Systems in NI Water by the Department for Infrastructure is a major concern for anyone who wants to see urgent action taken to resolve the crisis facing waste-water infrastructure in Northern Ireland. The @IoDNI Infrastructure report published in February 2026 recommended that DfI appoint an expert panel to look at how best to fund NIW. There is no reason this could not still happen in parallel with a forensic audit. If anything, the two things could be complimentary! The longer we delay fixing this problem, the more new housing developments will be blocked from construction, and the more we will continue to see huge increases in house prices and rents. This is not complicated stuff and it's much easier to solve than the complex issues affecting how best to run our Health Service in Northern Ireland. And let me be clear - this an Executive problem to solve. Any funding solutions should be led by DfI but they need to be discussed, agreed and owned by the Executive collectively. No one Party should have to solve this alone. It's much too serious an issue.
