Also worth noting that, as the UK has struck more trade deals and lowered applied tariffs at the WTO, the UK actually levies *less* customs duties at the border than it did as an EU member. So we have *both* lower tariffs and higher customs revenue, by being outside the EU.
One of the things that you never see mentioned, by those who suggest the UK should be in the EU Customs Union. EU members have to give the EU 75% of all customs duties collected. The UK collected Β£5 Billion in customs duties in FY 2025/26. Brexit let us keep Β£3.75 Billion.

You're not reading very well again Andrew, and as per usual you also seem to be incapable of getting the numbers right. The Β£5bn is the total take in the UK in 2025/26, with Β£3.75bn the amount the EU would take. The net figure you use is that from 2017, the cheapest level in a seven year period (wonder why you chose that one). The EU budget hasn't stood still Andrew. The annual gross contribution level for 2028 for the UK, were we to be a member, is estimated to be around Β£35 Billion. It would take around Β£100 billion of GDP to generate that amount of tax revenue to pay for it - which completely wipes out any talk of a 4% GDP loss. Completely. But seeing as you've never understood the figures, I don't expect you to know any of this. Let's see you cobble together a response to that eh, shall we. Go ahead.
True, but remember that total is already included in the net Β£9bn contribution to the EU budget. Β£9bn sounds a lot but it’s absolute peanuts πŸ₯œ when you compare it to the estimated Β£140 billion cost saving/synergies from being big part of the EU. And if you are now reminding us that Β£5 billion of that Β£9bn is essentially paid by other countries…. …well, rejoining is a no-brainer. #rejoinEU

The implications of the Bloomberg analysis of Brexit impact, released yesterday, don't seem to have been fully understood by the FBPE crowd. It is essentially saying that the impact to tax revenue is less than the cost of membership. Which is a nail in the coffin of rejoin.

Milton Friedman's greatest regret. The federal government discovered the perfect crime in 1943: make employers collect taxes before workers ever see their paychecks. You think you earn $60,000 per year, but you actually earn $75,000 and hand over $15,000 to politicians without ever touching it. The psychological difference is enormous. Before payroll withholding, Americans wrote quarterly checks directly to the Treasury. Picture yourself sitting at your kitchen table, writing a $3,750 check to the IRS every three months. The pain was immediate and visceral. Politicians faced constant pressure to justify every dollar because citizens felt the extraction in real time. Withholding transforms this concrete loss into an abstract accounting entry. Your employer becomes an unpaid tax collector, and you never experience the actual cost of government. Worse, most people celebrate their tax refunds as government generosity rather than recognizing them as interest-free loans they provided to politicians. The Treasury collects your money throughout the year, spends it immediately, then returns your own cash and receives gratitude. This system enables the explosion in government spending you witness today. Defense contractors billing $640 for toilet seats, agricultural subsidies for corn syrup, and congressional salaries for 535 people who rarely show up to work. When taxation feels painless, voters stop demanding accountability for how their money gets spent. Milton Friedman helped design withholding as a wartime emergency measure and later called it his greatest regret. Free market economists recognized that the psychological pain of direct taxation creates political pressure for fiscal restraint. The temporary always becomes permanent in government hands, and the emergency justification disappears while the extraction mechanism remains forever.

The by-election in Makerfield will be a mini Referendum on rejoining the EU or not. Andy Burnham is an extreme Rejoiner who needs to be told that disrespecting democracy comes at a great price - the end of his political career. express.co.uk/news/politics/…
