Shanshan has announced a private placement of up to RMB 4bn (US$600m), to be taken up entirely by Conch Group, its state-owned indirect controlling shareholder. RMB 2.5bn (US$375m) will go towards a new RMB 5.1bn (US$766m) anode base in Baotou, Inner Mongolia, with 150,000t a year of anode capacity and 50,000t of in-house graphitisation. The remaining RMB 1.5bn (US$225m) goes to working capital. At the maximum issue size, Conch’s controlled stake would rise above 30%, up from 21.9%, with a three-year lock-up on the new shares. Shanshan says the project will ease its capacity shortfall as EV and energy storage demand grows. The placement still needs state, shareholder and regulatory approval, and the project has yet to secure environmental approval or land rights.

Great to have been invited into @Talga_Ltd Cambridge R&D lab, spending the day with CTO Dr Anna Motta. We got into what makes the Vittangi deposit stand out, from the exceptional grade of the deposit, and the crystallinity that lets the graphite hold its performance and handle fast charging, to the processing technology they've developed in house, to how pricing in these higher-performance niches varies from the typical anode pricing we usually see, and where anode, silicon and recycling are all heading. Next stop, the EVA plant in Luleå.
