Good on @MSanchezPVD and @justinroias for stepping up when Mayor 🙃 would not. This is the kind of leadership our city needs, beginning with the needs of the most vulnerable and taking action to address them
Efforts spearheaded by Councilors @MSanchezPVD and @JustinRoias to provide warm sanctuary away from the cold for Providence's unhoused community, including opening up the Council chamber overnight, were profiled today in @thenation by @thomasbirm.
"Yet the plan to protect the city’s unhoused residents only occurred thanks to direct actions spearheaded by councilmen Roias and Sanchez, actions that stand in contrast to the wave of criminalization and callousness toward homelessness that has increasingly swept urban areas across the country."

Expect to hear more from Local 6516 about this after break. For now, Happy Holidays to all, even Brown's highly overcompensated executives ❤️ ❤️
But it doesn't have to be this way. Workers can and should have a say in how Brown's considerable resources are used. As we continue to bargain several contracts with the university, we will push for living wages for Brown's workers and real transparency in its finances
In all seriousness, these "community actions," sent to Brown's workers less than a week before break begins, are farcical. Brown administrators are telling workers they expect them, without prior consultation, to finance a grand transition in Brown's business model...
Last year Brown bought Provost Doyle a $2.5 million mansion (See here: tinyurl.com/3zcu69jv). We're sure they could get an excellent return if they put it on the market now. It may only be a few million, but, at times like these, every little bit counts!!
Show us your math, Frank!! The endowment reaped a $728 million return last year. Workers at Brown need to know how "fiscal responsibility" is defined such that hundreds of millions in unrestricted funds are off limits. Incidentally, we do have a proposal to reduce the deficit-
When it comes to instead using a slightly larger portion of the university's $7.2 billion endowment to cover its transition into becoming a "leading research institution," Doyle claims we are at "the upper limit of the fiscally responsible range." To that we say...
Much the same appears to be in the offing for staff and faculty, with the former set to have "maximum" growth of 0%. Translation: "Should your colleague leave, be ready to take on their work in addition to your own for no additional compensation, we won't replace them."
To give one example, the provost's message suggests "reductions in the size of [Ph.D.] cohorts admitted this year." Though details are lacking, grad workers know what this means in practice: More work shifted to a smaller number of us
The "community actions" outlined today follow an October message in which Doyle called for "innovative strategies to manage expense growth" to bring down a $46 million operating deficit. We see now what this fine piece of administrator speak means: "Workers must bear the cost"
🧵A day after sending heartfelt holidays wishes to the Brown community, Provost Francis J. Doyle III is back in our inboxes with the 🎁 of an austerity plan for Brown. As we imagine many of you have been busy with end of semester assignments, we'll give you an overview...
The PVD labor wave keep rolling 🌊🌊🌊
BREAKING: Nine hundred and fifty medical residents and fellows at four hospitals affiliated with Brown’s Warren Alpert School of Medicine are seeking union representation, according to public filings with the National Labor Relations Board.

Nothing but solidarity with @gradworkersofBU as they fight for their working lives.
This is the future that administrators have for higher ed: $100k a year in tuition while the university is stripped for parts. Our only defense is collective action
Brown University pay taxes challenge (impossible)
Big news for the @CityofProv! We’ve signed a historic PILOT agreement with @BrownUnivHealth (formerly Lifespan) to secure $1.5M in voluntary payments over 3 years — the largest in a decade. Together, we’re building a stronger, more sustainable future for our city.

We won our union! The real fight starts now. #gwu2
Never been a better time to organize!
The NLRB just banned companies nationwide from holding anti union "captive audience" meetings.
Amazon spent ~$17 million b/w 2022-2023 on consultants hired to convince its workers against unionizing.
The ruling will likely be reversed under Trump.
