Robert Putnam wrote about the 20th century decline of socializing this his 2000 book Bowling Alone. But what's happened since 2000? The folks at @DataProgress wanted to know. So they reconstituted the 20th century surveys that Putnam to measure changes between the 1990s and 2026. They were nice enough to share their results with me exclusively before publication. We tested how voters define the "working class" by asking about popular fictional characters. Voters agree most on defining Homer Simpson (+56), Fran Fine (+46), Peter Griffin (+46), and Hank Hill (+45) as working class.
