Dysregulation can be loud, disruptive, and difficult to manage. That does not mean adults get a free pass to become louder, sharper, or more reactive.
Our job is not to match a child’s intensity. It is to bring enough calm, clarity, and control to keep the situation from escalating further.
That does not mean ignoring behavior, lowering expectations, or avoiding consequences.
It means recognizing that adult behavior is part of the environment too. When we stay regulated, we are more likely to make better decisions, protect the relationship, and respond in a way that actually helps the student move forward.
A child may not be able to control the moment yet.
The adult still has to control their response.

A student’s past behavior should inform support, not become a permanent label.
A new school year gives educators an opportunity to reset relationships while still maintaining clear expectations and appropriate accountability. Students should have the chance to demonstrate growth without feeling that one difficult chapter has already determined how every adult will see them.
A fresh start does not ignore what happened. It recognizes that accountability should lead somewhere.
How do you create a meaningful reset with a student while still honoring responsibility and repair?

Discipline moments aren’t detours from learning.
They are learning.
Let’s model emotional regulation, problem-solving, and repair—so students don’t just hear about trust, they experience it.

In the remaining days of school, you may see some out of character behaviors from some students. Remember that not all students look forward to summer break. For some students, school is their safe place… where they receive consistent food, where they feel most successful, where they are surrounded by kindness and love, and where they can just be themselves. All behaviors are communication. Respond first with empathy and compassion. Thank you for everything you do for our kids! Have an amazing and well-deserved summer break!
