NEWS: Former Sen. Rob Portman, an Ohio Republican, tells me Vivek should take down the ad “The increasing incivility in the political arena should concern us all. This ad is an unfortunate example of that broader trend. It crosses the line. I hope the ad will be taken down and the final days of the campaign will focus on policy differences.”

Stephen was kidnapped and abused for FOUR YEARS by the dictator you just called a humanitarian. Putin kidnaps Americans, assassinates political rivals, kills journalists, murders toddlers, and kidnaps thousands of children. And you call him a humanitarian. There are no words.
Today, Stephen Hubbard is free and headed back home to his family.  Stephen is a proud American citizen, retired teacher, and U.S. Air Force veteran who loves our country. Now, he is on his way back to a family who loves him, a President who never gave up on him, and a nation that proudly welcomes him home. It was my honor to be with Stephen in St. Petersburg today before he departed for the United States. President Trump called Stephen to check on him and reaffirm his unwavering commitment to bringing all Americans wrongfully detained home. Stephen joins more than 110 Americans who @POTUS has freed since returning to office, including Robert Gilman, Ksenia Karelina, and Marc Fogel.  This release was not part of an exchange - and we extend our thanks to President Putin for releasing him on President Trump’s request. Thank you to @SecRubio, @JaredKushner, @CIADirector, Senior Director for Counterterrorism @SebGorka and the rest of the team for working tirelessly to achieve President Trump’s mission.  President Trump does not leave Americans behind and will continue fighting to bring them all home 🇺🇸.

AI debt worries are putting downward pressure on global gov't bond yields. But even with this going on, the French 10-year government bond yield is at the highs. French yields would be much higher were it not for AI wobbles. France is in a very bad place. robinjbrooks.substack.com/p/…

U.S. policy toward Russia and Ukraine has reached a turning point: 1. The President just waived sanctions on Russia, weeks after he signed the Graham bill that imposes them. He struck a deal to buy Russian diesel despite previously putting tariffs on countries, like India, that import Russian oil. And the President announced an energy ceasefire that, while desirable, neither Russia nor Ukraine agreed to. 2. Then there’s the mounting pressure on Ukraine. Trump called for Zelensky to be replaced by new leadership. Ukraine’s Starshield service slowed, making it harder to counter incoming drones and missiles. The administration reportedly threatened to cut intelligence and weapons sales if Kyiv didn’t stop striking Russian energy sites. 3. All that has happened over just the past week. In total, it marks a sharp shift away from supporting Ukraine and toward relaxing the pressure on Moscow. Why? 4. It’d be nice to believe that the administration has reached some new, heretofore unimagined theory of victory, in which Russian aggression won’t succeed but Ukrainian independence will. 5. Nyet such luck. The driver of this policy shift appears to be the President’s desire to lower diesel costs before the midterm elections.  6. Diesel prices are high, mostly because of the Iran war, which admits of no near-term solution. So the administration wishes to boost Russian supplies, even at the price of hobbling Ukraine’s offensive against Russian refineries. The rest seems personal frustration that Zelensky, quite understandably, won’t comply.  7. Domestic political considerations always influence U.S. foreign policy, but here we face the worst of all worlds. Diesel prices are unlikely to come down much and, even if they do, the President’s party looks likely to lose at least one house of Congress anyway. 8. The bigger casualty here is U.S. support for the victim and U.S. pressure on the aggressor. Perhaps forgotten after 4+ years of war is that it is about more than Ukrainian survival. 9. The cardinal rule of the postwar world is a prohibition against forcible conquest. Countries can’t simply decide they’d like to take another’s territory and wage war to get it.  10. Allowing that, and without imposing severe costs for it, is a step toward a global law of the jungle. The U.S. has resisted that for 80 years, and for a simple reason: we’ve seen that world before, and it was not good. 11. Americans thus have stake in ensuring Ukrainian survival. At stake is far more than the price of diesel. 12. At this turning point, the saving grace is that U.S. policy is likely to turn again. In our era of inconstancy, Washington might tack back toward Kyiv - after the elections, or if diesel prices retreat, or in light of Russian depredations, or just because. Given the costs piling up now, that return cannot come soon enough.

DC with autonomous vehicles is going to be like New Jersey with pumping your own gas. It'll be completely normal everywhere, but politicians will still pretend it's unsafe and talk about protecting jobs.
DC is facing a jobs crisis. Rushing the legalization of autonomous vehicles is irresponsible given the anticipated AI-related job displacement and disruptions that put countless workers at risk.

NEW from me is a major Brookings Institution study, “The Progressive Case for Social Security and Medicare Reform." It argues that refusing to reform benefits would radically redistribute income *upwards* from working families to wealthier seniors. 🧵 brookings.edu/articles/the-p…

Trump is lying again. Putin started the war and has repeatedly refused to negotiate to end it. The US spent nothing like $350 billion. Half the money is not missing. Washington and Moscow are both significantly more corrupt than Kyiv. Putin, not Zelensky, is a dictator who openly steals elections.
And not a word about Putin, who started this bloody war and is killing Ukrainians. Trump is Putin's friend, as he himself says.

Bloomberg citing western intelligence says Russia is now supplying missiles to Iran. All that extra cash that Trump just agreed to funnel into Putin's war coffers will surely help with that.

What puzzles me about French economists like Gabriel, as well as Emmanuel and Tomas, is the zeal they bring in trying to convince Americans that they have to implement a French model that is focused on redistribution rather than growth, because every indication we have suggests that the focus on redistribution has cost France, and some other countries in Europe, like my own native Belgium, very dearly so far. In fact, the French economy looks like it is about to enter a serious fiscal crisis because its redistribution model is no longer sustainable. Californians ought to celebrate the fact that wealth is being created in California, and not somewhere else in the U.S. or in the rest of the world. Americans, and Californians, for that matter, should continue to do what they do best, which is focus on growing the pie. It would be a mistake to adopt a model that is fundamentally broken. What the French should do instead is try to copy the model that made California an engine of innovation. In that case, smart, highly educated French kids wouldn't come to the U.S. to start companies. They would do so in France. If they had done that, they would have more than one AI startup company.
As voting begins today, the world needs to know what Silicon Valley billionaires are doing to sabotage the billionaire tax now on the ballot in California. This is shocking. 🧵

Cutting parking fines as an anti-inflation policy is one of the dumbest ideas I've ever heard but it's in keeping with the Council left bloc's relentless prioritization of the interests of people who break rules over the interests of people who follow them.
Councilmember @RobertWhite_DC said this morning he wants to HALVE parking fines in D.C. (Will propose as an amendment to @BrianneKNadeau's strategic parking enforcement bill. But @ChmnMendelson says it isn't germane.) White: “Inflation is kicking our butts at the grocery store.”

Question: When you hear Treasury Secretary Bessent say we're just going to grow our way out of the bond crisis, does the market buy it? @elerianm: “I say the bond market no longer has the patience. It has heard this for a long time, and the bond market wants to see action on the fiscal side.”

Tariffs do not add to GDP. We have a little more steel, a little less of everything else and, net, lower GDP and income.
Making American Steelmaking Great Again. President Trump is prioritizing hardworking Americans instead of foreign labor. This will become the largest steel plant in American history, create thousands of jobs, and add billions to the economy for decades to come.
