During COVID, you and CTU leadership unsuccessfully pressured the General Assembly to prevent Catholic schools from resuming in-person learning while city public schools remained shuttered for 78 weeks. You are leading the effort to lobby Gov. Pritzker to opt out of the federal scholarship program, which would provide hundreds of millions of dollars in educational assistance and tuition support to lower-income families whose children attend private schools. Did the Pope know that Mayor Johnson’s entourage included individuals—including the mayor himself—who have been hostile to supporting poor Black families seeking to send their children to parochial schools? For example, your efforts stripped 175 scholarships from Hope Academy’s 300 high school students on Chicago’s West Side. You and the mayor should have asked the Pope for absolution!
