Not sure about a study, and not quite the Q you asked, but I did a piece for @GoldenStateOrg looking at how frequently the top spender in a race loses. California has a long track record of this, and in LA city in 2022, 6 lower-spending candidates won. golden-state.org/money-cant-…

Money can't buy you love — or an election in L.A. and California

Just ask Rick Caruso and Meg Whitman. In many city and state elections, the candidate who had the most amount of campaign cash still lost.
