Twenty-five years ago this morning, I was working in Northern Virginia. I was not yet an American citizen, but it was my 4th year of calling Alexandria, VA home. I remember hearing the low thud in the distance, and then seeing the smoke coming out of the Pentagon, with the TV in the office already showing the terrorist attack unfolding in New York. The rest the day and the week was just a blur - and I honestly don't remember much. What I do remember most from the days that followed isn't the fear. It's the flags that went up in the windows on my street. Neighbors I had never spoken to reaching out to ask if I was okay. Lines around the block at blood banks. Strangers doing the small, unglamorous work of taking care of each other. I came to America from South Africa in 1997 for the first time on a work visa, and I finally became a US citizen in 2016 - one of the proudest moments in my life. Like a lot of immigrants, I spent my early years here as a guest - grateful, careful, standing slightly outside of it. September 11 was the day that changed. I was grieving with this country, and to my surprise, I realized I was grieving for it. In October 2016, in San Antonio, TX, I raised my right hand and took the oath. I swore allegiance to the United States of America, and I have never taken it lightly - not the oath, and not the cost of building a country where someone like me gets to swear it. Today I'm thinking about the 2,977 people who never made it home. The first responders who climbed the stairs while everyone else came down. The families who have carried 25 years of empty chairs. The rescue workers and service members still living with what that day did to their health. And I'm thinking about what we owe them: the everyday version of that same courage. Show up. Tell the truth. Look out for the person next to you, especially when it costs you something. To everyone here under the spacious Texas sky and beyond who serves, responds, and rebuilds - thank you. Always remember the importance of stopping and recognizing how easy we can lose what it took 250 years to build. Like Bono from U2 said, America is not just a country, but an idea.
