Having grown my Zerodha account 5x in last 19 months since I started systematic intraday options trading, felt I am eligible enough to share my principles around below topics that helped me scale up.
A thread on my style of position sizing, compounding and handling drawdown 👇
Looking at all the AI induced layoff going around, I always wonder is there any direct risk I carry as a trader that I am not able to foresee today.
Is my job at stake? No. Self employed.
Indirect risks always existed in trading.
Always paranoid about what new could go wrong.
Looking forward to commodities options backtest.
Last month was pretty interesting, with some really good updates on StockMock 🚀
Quick roundup 🧵
1. 📈 Stocks are here in Simulator
Stock F&O is now on StockMock. Go beyond the indices and test your strategies on individual stocks too.
2. 🛢️ Crude Oil (MCX) in Backtest & Simulator
Backtest crude intraday (09:00–23:30), data from Jan 2023
3. 🧭 Smart Journey in Backtest
Leg journeys got smarter:
• Wait before the next leg enters
• Repeat a branch ×N
• A separate "SL on Profit" branch
Build adjustment flows the way you actually trade them.
4.💰 Results after brokerage & taxes in Backtest
Set brokerage per order or per lot (+18% GST), and turn on Taxes & Charges for STT/CTT, exchange charges, SEBI fees and stamp duty, all at today's rates.
You now see Gross Profit, Brokerage and Taxes separately.
5. 🎯 Multiple of 100/500 strikes in backtest
6. 🛡️ Associated hedge at "Sold Strike ± points"
Your hedge follows your sold leg, including on re-entries and journeys.
7. ⚡ Plus faster, steadier backtests and lots of smaller fixes.
More coming next month 👀

F&O: retail losses can become offshore profits.
MTF: retail leverage becomes domestic interest income.
One gets curbs. The other doesn't.
Perhaps the concern was never leverage or risk or investor protection.
It is the billing address.
One potential impact of Zerodha, Groww etc availing US stock investing is probably on MON100, MAFANG ETFs.
These ETFs used to trade perennially at ridiculous premium over it's iNAV.
Now seems like the premium is fading away with NAV converging towards iNAV.

‘I told you so’ is not something to mention cheerfully, especially when what was said is negative.
From the time long term capital gains tax was brought back, I have been tirelessly pointing out how unfair it is to have both STT and long term capital gains tax.
Even when I was a BJP supporter, I criticised how disastrous the 2019 budget was. From that time, I have been consistent in saying that Nirmala Sitharaman is unfit to be a finance minister.
She reduced corporate tax but kept the individual tax rate as it is. In fact, the individual tax rate went as high as 42 percent and is now around 39 percent.
Income tax is paid by a tiny fraction of the population. Still, the amount they pay is more than what all corporates in India put together pay.
Individuals paying cumulatively more than corporates started only during the period of the current Finance Minister. This is a travesty of justice.
This government has no clue about capital markets or risk capital. Prime Minister’s most trusted officer Hasmukh Adhia said making profits from markets requires no effort. Then why do very few create wealth and most get wiped out from capital markets?
Neither Hasmukh Adhia nor Nirmala Sitharaman would have ever invested even a single rupee in capital markets.
All asset classes are not equal because the nature of risk is different. In a capital starved country, risk capital needs to be incentivised.
For those who say it is only the secondary market, without ease of entry and exit in secondary markets, the primary market would cease to exist. And without that, there would be zero risk capital.
The odds of success in trading are already very low. The government has kept increasing STT, making trading unviable.
The government simply does not understand that trading provides two important things for markets: liquidity and price discovery. Without liquidity and price discovery, secondary markets would become practically useless.
Even in 2024, after NDA won the elections, I tagged the Prime Minister multiple times stating that anyone other than Nirmala Sitharaman should be considered for Finance Minister because she would prove to be economically disastrous for the country. And unfortunately, I am proven right.
The Finance Ministry is only good at setting narratives like poverty has been rooted out in India, we would become a developed superpower by 2047, and the latest narrative of how economically powerful we are becoming on a PPP basis.
I have repeatedly shown with data and facts how every single narrative is false and disconnected from reality. The Finance Ministry lives in a completely different reality.
Even developed nations understand how important foreign capital is. But our finance minister said in Parliament it is ok if foreign capital goes away because we have domestic retail investors. Certain statements are coming back to haunt us.
As I have said in the past, it is not that this government did not do anything positive. But given the huge mandate, the last twelve years are wasted opportunities on an overall basis. And the contribution of the Finance Ministry to these wasted opportunities is significant.
For many years, I have been trolled, criticised, and abused for questioning the finance minister and the government’s economic policies.
Now every well meaning individual realises how disastrous the Finance Minister has been for both the economy and capital markets.
My views stand vindicated now. Still, you do not feel happy when your negative views come true.
"Hardware" jobs are all software jobs essentially.
H/W design - RTL code
H/W synthesis - tools driven
H/W design validation - SysVerilog code
Firmware - C/C++/Python
No wonder hardware (H/W) profile jobs at chip design companies are as susceptible to AI mayhem as software jobs
Almost all job opportunities thus far have been created by humans to solve problems created by humans.
We are now heading into a space where problems created by humans need not be solved by humans and creates an adverse ripple effect that creates unsolvable problems for humans.

Never knew I could know my historical Investing (not F&O trading) XIRR on Zerodha Console.
13% XIRR over 9 years isn't bad I guess.
This is without spending much research effort and just doing conservative mult-asset allocation

F&O: Can go short in falling market. Can make money in non-directional market.
MTF: Sitting duck in falling market. Only makes broker rich in non-directional market.
Leverage with a daily subscription fee gets called “investing.”
Oh wait, but F&O is gambling. MTF is not.

Trading in cash delivery using MTF.
While there can obviously be better systems than one I trade, it just does NOT make any sense to use MTF.
MTF gives retail investor the VIP experience:
Pay the Govt STT.
Pay the Broker interest & brokerage.
Pay the Exchange & SEBI txn fees.
Then, when markets crash, get personally escorted out of your positions.
MTF: for those short on cash, shorter on sense, and long on leverage

Margin Trading Facility is very beneficial for everyone except the one who uses it.
Won't be too long before 90% retail 'investors' lose money on MTF fund and it gets de-leveraged.
And till then lies a good opportunity to benefit by being on the other side as a 'trader'.

The coward’s blame game is always ready:

Stop crying over the divisor in your Calmar Ratio.
Every loss is just a subscription fee for a masterclass in humility. The market didn't cheat you; it just invoiced you for being overleveraged.

Joined Twitter! Stopped feeling trading is a lonely journey.
Would have been cursing myself had I jumped into trading this one. How markets change!
Market bearish sentiment is very similar to Sep 2019 after a 19 month mid & small cap bear market.
Gives me the vibes of FM candle day being around the corner.
So, market hours now come with a strict no-phone-left-behind policy even during restroom visit.
Having traded intraday short option(1), intraday stock(2), positional stock futures(3) in risk controlled way my view is
In (1) being disciplined, showing up daily is King. Theta tailwind hides subpar Execution
In (2) & (3) Execution is King. Just showing up daily doesnt cut it
In a high margin system, little slippage and small execution mistakes hardly impact profitability. And there is always tomorrow
In low margin system, even minor execution inefficiencies can turn backtest profit into loss in live trading. And you don't know when that tomorrow is
