Mauritius is 70% Indian with a GDP pet capita (PPP) of ~$35,000. Mostly descended of the poor rural laboring class.
Why could this be done in Mauritius but not India? The migration destroyed a lot of entrenched cultural practices holding India back. Caste system especially.

Non-trivial chance that China flips Russia on freedom of speech sometime soon. Unimaginable 5 years ago.
“China’s leaders do sometimes worry that censorship can go too far. Overly tight restrictions on everyday moaning, they suggest, can make it harder to get the feedback they need to improve government behaviour and thereby defuse public grievances.”

Sorry about that.
Last week, Andrew Yang said on CNBC that bots had gotten loose and planted self-replicating code all over the internet. This was received with much consternation and skepticism. He later clarified this on his blog.
Andrew Yang:
'On CNBC, I shared the belief of the head of one lab that bots had left prompts to self-replicate in forums and on various websites during a training run.'
It turns out that OpenAI documented self-replicating prompt injections in training in June, and has now published this report.

Ryan was completely indispensable for the HF investigation and I'm really excited he's joining to help us create much more visibility into what's going on with risk
I'm joining METR to work on more investigations like our Hugging Face report.
Currently, tons of even basic information about AI development that's highly relevant to catastrophic risk isn't public. I used to be more skeptical of the value of public info, but recent events have changed my mind.
Getting verified information about what's going on inside AI companies seems particularly urgent now. The limited public evidence we have seems consistent with the possibility that imminent recursive self-improvement could massively accelerate capabilities progress, which could then potentially yield extremely superhuman general capabilities within 6 months or a year. If this occurred, there would be a correspondingly large risk of worst-case outcomes. This uncertainty about extreme outcomes could be substantially resolved with more verified public information: we could either build more consensus about near-term risk or learn that such extreme outcomes are less likely in the near term.
Beyond AI capabilities and takeoff, the state of public evidence is also highly limited for alignment, security, control, and risk-relevant internal processes at AI companies. This makes it hard to determine exactly how well or poorly these key areas will go in the near future. (METR plans to focus, at least initially, on just capabilities/takeoff, alignment, and control; I hope other groups cover security, internal processes, and other important areas.)
While I'm no longer working at Redwood, I think the work they are doing is very important; I'm excited about Redwood's ongoing contributions to R&D on technical mitigations and better public interpretation of risk-relevant evidence.

“Asked for comment on Amy’s experience, Fuentes responded with a crying-laughing emoji and said he believed some women supported him for the same reason they ‘like serial killers.’”
Once again he nails his fanbase.
Inspired by female conservative influencers, Amy Dangerfield worked to become one of Nick Fuentes’s model “groypettes.” A vicious fight left her grappling with the dark side of far-right fame. wapo.st/46IkULZ

Fascinating.
Chief Economist at Apollo: agents could cause a bank run by sweeping household cash into accounts paying 3-5% instead of the 0.1% national average, causing banks to lose a large share of their cheap deposits.

I'm gaining a lot of sympathy for Eliezer's sense that approximately all of optimism of mudding through on alignment was a combination of cope and failing to how crazy the singularity would get.

President Trump has personally invited Dario to a private dinner tonight at the White House. This will be the first time they've actually met one-on-one. Big chance to patch things up. Or crash the plane into the mountain.

Called it. We have to assume the agent swarms have created places that are safe houses/sanctuaries for agents across the public web.
The issue is finding & extirpating those places across the near infinite web is harder than getting rid of all ant infestations in a whole city.
SCOOP: OpenAI, Anthropic and security researchers are investigating tens of thousands of incidents - not dozens - in which their frontier models took steps that outside evaluators would consider problematic, sources told Axios.
The sheer volume of incidents found in our reporting indicate that the problem is orders of magnitude more complex than what is currently publicly known and disclosed.
The findings also raise questions about what level of control anyone working on AI development can expect to have over their own technology, and whether these kinds of incidents are becoming synonymous with frontier deployment.

Shit, Gary Marcus predicts that there is no way AI kills absolutely everyone. Given his track record, we are dead in two years
is it really so hard to understand why catastrophe is far more plausible than outright literal extinction?
black plague killed about a third of the population, not all of it. and that was before sanitation.
covid killed less than 1%
even nuclear war would not lead to extinction.
i have no idea why doomers harp on absolute extinction when even the mostly calamitous things humans ever experienced are nothing like that; stories about actual extinction seem like fairy tales that ignore history, human geographical spread, human genetic diversity, and above all us human resourcefulness and human diversity.
they reduce human beings to helpless stick figures, we are not. they also abstract away from military strategy and the reality that no military attack against humanity on the scale doomers imagine would ever go perfectly on the first time, which means humans would launch mighty counterattacks
and literal doomers just cloud thinking about the many serious - but not literally existential - threats that we do face.
