Watched the full podcast with all the context, it was only expected to hit such numbers because of the money/time sink that happened across the 10 years. Dev team was way too big + the money/infrastructure to support the game just wasn't sustainable. They seems like they figured the game wasn't going to last long but they spent so much money on it, so instead of immediately canning it, they released it to see if it would do anything. Unfortunately what it needed to do goes way beyond what any fighting game has ever done in existences lol.
