From the archives this day October 18, 2025 Seebe, Alberta An amazing night of high altitude Oxygen rich aurora. Aurora particles follow Earth’s magnetic field lines, creating the curtain-like sheets and narrow rays. When those particles excite oxygen high in the atmosphere, the oxygen gives off red light.

Greatland has some of the highest ratings of any aurora tour company in Alaska, and I personally know their guides, who understand space weather and aurora behavior. They will pick you up from your accommodations in Fairbanks and drop you off after.

Looking for an aurora tour in Fairbanks this week? Maia is full on October 18, but Greatland Adventures, another tour company I partner with, still had open seats on that night as of this morning. Seats can sell out quickly.

Intense green arc of aurora. Watch the motion inside the thin band here, undulating and twisting. It was so mesmerizing to witness.

Here's another auroral display from one of Maia's aurora tours in Fairbanks, Alaska from a few nights ago! We have a coronal hole inbound with fast wind aimed to shake up high-latitude auroras in about a week or so. Check our calendar to book a tour to take advantage! go.theauroraguy.com/maia

Face the Outdoors, a company I partner with, is one of the few lodge tours that will load everyone into the van and chase clear skies. Even though the lodge is south of town, Mike Schultz still picks you up and drops you off in Fairbanks.

Thinking about a lodge tour on your trip to Fairbanks? Most lodge tours have one big limitation: if the clouds roll in over the lodge, you're stuck under them for the rest of the night, and clouds decide the outcome of a lot of nights in Fairbanks.

If you'd like to watch the aurora from your accommodations near Fairbanks, I recommend considering Borealis Basecamp. I partner with Basecamp, which is outside town and away from much of the light pollution you get in central Fairbanks.

Picture this: you're tucked inside a glass dome in South Iceland, and the sky above you turns green. ✨ This is a night at Aurora Igloo near Hella, one of the most magical glamping stays in Iceland. Each dome gives you a front-row seat to the northern lights, right from your bed. Outside, snow-capped mountains and open South Coast views stretch as far as you can see. Ready to sleep under the aurora yourself? 🌌 Book your stay: guidetoiceland.is/accommodat… 🎥 @charlieonhistravels on TikTok

From the archives this day October 14, 2022 TWP-274 North of Calgary Alberta The Moon this night was a waning 79% Moon, lighting up the landscape, but it couldn't wash out the aurora borealis northern lights this night. Nice example of Auroral Beads, they are elusive as they only last for a few minutes, and are quite beautiful to see as they move across the sky, this night they were unusual moving from West to East, not the normal movement of East to West. The 3rd image was taken just as I arrived at 0140 MST.
