As Breast Cancer Awareness Month comes to a close, HART Senior Contracts Specialist Audry R. shares her family’s personal story of three sisters facing breast cancer and finding strength in one another. 🎗️
---------------------------------------
Three Sisters, One Fight: Our Family’s Breast Cancer Story
Breast cancer entered our lives without warning. Over the course of three years, three sisters received the same life-altering diagnosis — despite having no known family history of breast cancer.
Our journey began in February 2008, when my sister Ruth received her diagnosis. It was the kind of moment that divides life into “before” and “after.” Watching her navigate the appointments, the uncertainty, and the strength she found within herself changed all of us. Her experience made breast cancer real in a way it had never been before.
Two years later, in June 2010, I received my own breast cancer diagnosis. I had just been promoted to Director of Procurement for Polk County, a position I had worked hard to earn. At the same time, I was getting ready to present at our Procurement National Forum in August — something that had been on my bucket list.
Suddenly, I found myself balancing one of the most demanding and exciting moments of my career with one of the most frightening moments of my life.
Just five months later, in October 2010 — during Breast Cancer Awareness Month — my sister Joyce received her diagnosis. By then, our family had become intimately familiar with the path ahead: the appointments, the treatment decisions, the emotional highs and lows, and the constant need to lean on one another.
Facing breast cancer together meant none of us ever had to walk this road alone. We understood each other’s fears, frustrations, and hopes in a way few others could. We became each other’s advocates, sounding boards, and sources of strength.
Our experience is a reminder that breast cancer does not always follow a predictable pattern. We had no known family history, yet three sisters were diagnosed within three years. That is why routine screening matters for everyone. It is why knowing your family history is important, but not enough. And it is why advocating for yourself – asking questions, pushing for answers, trusting your instincts—can make all the difference.
Today our family’s story is one of resilience. Three sisters, three diagnoses — and three breast cancer survivors.

Connecting with our community, one conversation at a time! 🚌🗣️
Our Community Engagement team visited Brandon Exchange on Monday to talk with shoppers and riders about HART service in the area.
We met Jose, who recently moved from Houston to South County and rides Route 31 a few times a week to shop and visit family. His favorite onboard features? The charging ports and Wi-Fi that help him stay connected along the way.
We also caught up with Operator Celis and enjoyed seeing the friendly connection between our operator and Route 31 customers.
Thanks to everyone who talked transit with us!
