Let's say it wasn't intentional. It's still hard to understand how Little Italy and Italian Americans were overlooked not just by this mayor, but by the previous as well.
I'm a first-gen Italian American. My father came to America from Italy as a refugee in the 1950s. He enlisted in the @82ndABNDiv, and afterward spent more than 50 years as a member of @IUBAC as a bicklayer, building New York with his own hands.
I couldn't drive anywhere in NYC without him pointing to a building, school, home, etc where he either worked or was the foreman of. His hands have more history in New York's buildings than most people will ever realize. He always joked that his jewelry is littered in stonework all over the city. lol
Italian immigrants built New York. They helped build America. They came here, worked incredibly hard, served this country, raised families, and were proud to become Americans. They LOVED America.
Whether the omission was intentional or not, Italian Americans and Little Italy deserve to be recognized as a very large part of New York City's immigrant story.
