The “time and place” argument works both ways. A college classroom or campus cafeteria is not a job interview, corporate office, courtroom, or formal event. Many of these students live on campus, and they should not be expected to dress up every day just to attend class or grab something to eat. These are adults. They understand that different settings may require different clothing, but that does not mean other adults should force them to dress according to someone else’s idea of how Black people should look or be represented. Being comfortable in class does not mean someone lacks professionalism, discipline, or ambition. A bonnet or durag does not prevent anyone from learning, completing assignments, or earning a degree.
