The East Africa Regional Convening closed with a clear message: commitments to ending gender-based violence must translate into continued action. Over the course of Day Two, commitment makers moved from reviewing progress and identifying gaps to working through the advocacy priorities they want to carry forward. Participants developed campaign ideas, examined where collective advocacy can strengthen their work and considered the actions required to keep these priorities moving beyond the Generation Equality reporting cycle. Tech-facilitated gender-based violence was a significant thread throughout the discussions, highlighting the need for stronger and more coordinated responses to violence perpetrated through digital technologies and spaces. The day ended with commitment makers reflecting on what they are prepared to take forward from the convening and committing to continue the work through stronger collaboration and collective advocacy. The East Africa process also builds on the evidence, priorities and lessons emerging from the Southern Africa Regional Convening, bringing the two regional processes towards a shared coalition position. For Akili Dada, this work is about creating the conditions for commitment makers to shape their own priorities, strengthen their collective voice and hold the focus on gender-based violence beyond the life of a reporting cycle. The regional convenings, supported through the UN Women ACT Programme @UNTrustFundEVAW , have provided that space for evidence, advocacy and accountability to meet.

Students from Iganga Secondary School deliver the children’s statement on menstrual health and hygiene, envisioning a world where girls can fully participate in everyday life with dignity and confidence. They highlight affordability and quality of menstrual products as major challenges, noting that many families cannot afford safe products, forcing some girls to use unsafe methods that increase health risks, infections, stigma, and school absenteeism. Poor transport and limited access to sanitary products were also raised as barriers. The students call for stronger government support through provision of menstrual supplies, clean water, private changing spaces in schools, reduced taxes on menstrual products, and increased budgeting for menstrual health and hygiene. They also challenge harmful stereotypes and cultural beliefs that label menstruating girls as dirty or ready for marriage, noting that these taboos continue to limit open discussions and isolate girls. The statement calls on government, NGOs, and communities to strengthen existing systems, educate communities, and ensure that every girl in Uganda can manage menstruation safely, confidently, and with dignity. #MHMDay2026 #MenstrualJusticeForAll #PeriodFriendlyWorld

Menstrual health does not exist in isolation.” @KateNamyalo draws attention to the intersections between menstrual health, sexual and reproductive health, maternal health, and environmental wellbeing and why coordinated responses are essential in closing accountability gaps. She emphasized that lack of menstrual health information, sanitation, water, and supplies continues to affect dignity, education, health-seeking behavior, and self-esteem, especially in rural communities where stigma and silence remain strong. She further highlighted the importance of stronger policies, infrastructure, community health promotion, and the integration of menstrual health into adolescent and sexual reproductive health programs. #MHDay2026 #MenstrualJusticeForAll #PeriodFriendlyWorld
