In 2016, Giving the Basics launched our Police Program, providing hygiene products to officers to share with people in need. Sgt. Cory LeMoine of KCPD shared: “Our partnership has improved community relations as well as improving the quality of life for those we assist.”

2013: To the Hygiene Cave! Giving the Basics had officially outgrown Teresa’s garage. With the help of the Dean family, we moved into the caves in downtown KC and created room for the mission to grow.

15 Years of Giving the Basics | 2012 As awareness of hygiene insecurity spread, so did the desire to help. Drives popped up at churches, schools, and birthday parties. Soon, we needed a bigger trunk. Even the garage wasn’t big enough. The need was growing. So was GTB.

15 years ago, Teresa imagined a future where people could be freed from the shame of not having basic hygiene products. The goal was never to become the largest hygiene bank. It was to help build a future where no family has to wonder where they’ll find soap, or toilet paper.

15 Years of KC Coming Together. The idea behind Giving the Basics was born in 2009, when a single mother asked Teresa Hamilton for help getting toilet paper. One moment became an idea. An idea became a community.

A school bus just pulled up to the Giving the Basics Hygiene Hub. The boxes we pack don't stay here. They get loaded onto a bus, head to a school, and make their way to students who need them. This is what it looks like when a community keeps the basics moving.
