Speaking during a high-level stakeholder meeting, EACC Commissioner,Mr John Ogallo said closing loopholes in port operations would not be sufficient without holding public officers accountable for their actions. He emphasised that safeguarding the port required robust oversight mechanisms, integrity and a culture in which misconduct is addressed decisively. Chief of Staff and Head of the Public Service, Mr Felix Koskei underscored the importance of strengthening controls as cargo volumes passing through the port continue to grow. He noted that efficient and transparent port operations were critical to protecting public revenue, facilitating legitimate trade and helping to ease the cost of living. UNODC Eastern Africa, Team Lead for the Anti-Corruption Hub Mr Francesco Chechi, highlighted the importance of coordinated action and international cooperation in tackling corruption and financial crime at strategic trade gateways. He noted that weaknesses in oversight and gaps in coordination can create opportunities for corrupt practices and allow criminal networks to exploit trade and financial systems. Strengthening collaboration among relevant institutions, he said, is essential to closing these gaps, improving the detection of illicit activities and safeguarding the integrity of port operations. Chechi also underscored the importance of complementing enforcement with preventive measures, including stronger institutional safeguards, information sharing and capacity building. These efforts can help institutions identify corruption risks early, curb illicit financial flows and protect legitimate businesses from unfair competition. As a vital gateway for Kenya and the wider East African region, the Port of Mombasa plays a central role in trade and economic growth. Strengthening accountability and transparency in its operations is essential to protecting public resources, supporting legitimate businesses and maintaining confidence in the country's trade systems.

𝗘𝗔𝗖𝗖, 𝗢𝗗𝗣𝗣 𝗣𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗝𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗿𝘂𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗟𝗮𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration to enhance the investigation and prosecution of corruption and money laundering cases. The renewed commitment follows a high-level strategic meeting between the leadership of the two institutions held at the Kenya School of Government. The meeting brought together the EACC Chairperson, Chief Executive Officer, Commissioners, the Director of Public Prosecutions and senior management from both institutions to review progress in their partnership and chart a stronger course for coordinated action. EACC Chairperson Dr. David Oginde said corruption remains one of Kenya's greatest development challenges, eroding public trust and undermining service delivery. He noted that closer collaboration between investigators and prosecutors is essential to delivering effective justice and renewing momentum in the fight against corruption and money laundering. EACC CEO Mr. Abdi Mohamud, on the other hand, underscored that collaboration among justice sector institutions is a constitutional imperative and critical to achieving meaningful outcomes. He observed that the public is less concerned with the distinction between investigators and prosecutors and is primarily interested in seeing justice served through successful investigations, prosecutions and recovery of corruptly acquired assets. The DPP, Mr. Renson Ingonga, said the engagement provided an opportunity for the two institutions to strengthen service delivery by improving the quality of investigations and prosecutions. He emphasized that EACC and the ODPP share a common responsibility to protect the public interest and uphold the rule of law through a coordinated approach. The meeting reviewed existing areas of cooperation, examined challenges affecting corruption and money laundering cases, and agreed on measures to enhance institutional coordination. Key resolutions included joint capacity-building programmes for investigators and prosecutors, strengthened collaboration in case review processes, and greater focus on high-impact corruption and money laundering cases. The two institutions reaffirmed their shared resolve to deepen collaboration in the discharge of their constitutional mandates, recognizing that effective inter-agency coordination is critical to protecting public resources, strengthening accountability and enhancing the administration of justice.

I had an engaging meeting with Hon. Judith Pareno, Principal Secretary at the State Department for Justice, Human Rights and Constitutional Affairs of the Republic of Kenya on the sidelines of the 35th session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice #CCPCJ35. We took stock of the strong collaboration between Kenya and @UNODC, particularly in expanding access to legal aid, advancing criminal justice sector reforms, strengthening anti-corruption efforts and enhancing protection frameworks for victims of trafficking. We also explored avenues for further cooperation in police capacity-building, including counter-terrorism, as well as strengthening regional law enforcement collaboration.
