The PERPS hype right now is INSANE.
People are posting $50K, $100K, even $300K+ in payouts.
But there's something nobody wants to talk about.
How much are these traders actually SPENDING to get those payouts?
Let me explain.
Take @DamnGoodTrading for example. Based on the numbers he's publicly shared:
• $250,000 spent
• $293,000 withdrawn
• $43,000 net profit
First off, $43K profit is $43K profit. Not taking anything away from him.
And to be fair, that $250K could've been spent over time, with previous payouts funding more accounts.
But it raises a serious question.
At what point does spending hundreds of thousands on prop accounts make LESS sense than building your own personal futures account?
If you're consistently profitable, why not gradually build up your own capital and trade 10–20 contracts without continuously paying challenge fees?
When I asked Kyle what the appeal was, his response was credit card points 😂
Now here's where things get interesting.
THE AFFILIATE GAME.
Ever wonder why some affiliates constantly post MASSIVE payout screenshots?
Big payouts → More attention → More signups → More commissions → More accounts → Bigger payouts.
It's a cycle.
Some affiliates can afford to burn through accounts because the commissions from their referrals help fund the next round.
The average trader doesn't have that luxury.
You're watching someone play a game where their account costs may be partially or entirely subsidized by affiliate revenue.
And then trying to replicate it with your own hard-earned money.
That's a VERY different risk profile.
Now don't get me wrong.
I actually LOVE what perps are bringing to the industry.
•Static drawdown.
•Uncapped payouts.
•No consistency rules.
•No artificial restrictions.
Passing a challenge gets you closer to real trading conditions than most traditional futures props offer.
But there's a catch.
NO RULES = MORE FREEDOM.
NO RULES = MORE BLOWN ACCOUNTS.
For disciplined traders, this can be life-changing.
For gamblers, it's a faster way to lose even more money.
And there's another tradeoff people keep overlooking.
With perps props, the firm controls the trading infrastructure.
Spreads. Fills. Slippage. And in some cases, even the price feed.
You're still operating within THEIR environment.
A personal live futures account gives you more independence and control.
That doesn't mean prop trading is bad. It means the economics have to make sense.
If you're paying a firm to access capital, the ROI needs to justify the cost and the tradeoffs.
Which brings me to my biggest point.
TRADERS NEED TO START TRACKING THEIR REAL NUMBERS.
Not just the $100K payout screenshot.
I'm talking:
• Total spent on evaluations
• Resets and activation fees
• Total withdrawals
• Net P&L after ALL fees
• Actual ROI
• Affiliate commissions earned
Because someone withdrawing $200K after spending $180K is in a VERY different position than someone withdrawing $50K after spending $5K.
Yet on X, the first trader gets all the attention.
I've been working on something behind the scenes to help traders see these numbers for themselves. More on that soon 👀
Traders deserve to understand their REAL profitability across firms, accounts, and payouts.
Stop measuring success by how much you WITHDRAW.
Start measuring it by how much you KEEP.
The biggest payout isn't always the biggest winner.
Well written.
