ALT A spiral galaxy. It has a prominent spiral arm on one side (lower left) and a wide, glowing core. Dark brown filaments of dust swirl through its disk, while blue clusters of stars are visible mostly going out to its arm. On the opposite side of the arm (upper right), gas trails off from the disk, beyond the field of view in this image. A matching spiral arm is not visible on this side. The galaxy lies on a dark background.

ALT A full disk image of Earth, as seen from the Orion capsule. The image shows Earth at nighttime, using a slow camera shutter speed to bring out details that would otherwise be shrouded in darkness. The planet is a pale blue, swirling with white clouds and glowing slightly lighter blue in places from reflected light. From about 8 to 9 o’clock, a large brown landmass is Africa, with the Iberian peninsula twinkling with lights just where the planet curves. At the 1 o’clock spot, aurora glow in a thin green glow, just barely separated from the planet’s surface. Earth is set against the black of space. Credit: NASA
