As an undergraduate student in Alabama, Samuel Watson wanted to learn the Korean language. That interest propelled Samuel to study abroad in South Korea with a scholarship from the Gilman Program. As a Gilman scholar in Seoul, Korea, Samuel took part in intensive language training. When he came back home he shared his knowledge by teaching introductory Korean to students at the University of Alabama! Now Samuel is pursuing a master’s degree in computer science with the goal of combining his Korean language and coding skills to advance cybersecurity. As one of our new Gilman Alumni Ambassadors, Samuel was in Washington D.C. this summer learning how to help U.S. undergraduates gain a competitive edge by studying abroad.

The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship Program is proud to announce it will award 3,500 scholarships to U.S. undergraduate students this spring application cycle to study or intern abroad. This number includes 69 recipients of the Gilman-McCain Scholarship, awarded to child and spousal dependents of active U.S. military personnel. These Gilman Scholars, who are also federal Pell Grant recipients, come from all 50 states and the District of Columbia, and will study or intern in 100 countries across the globe through spring 2026. Among our spring 2025 scholarship recipients, select students will receive supplemental funding: • 92 are receiving awards to conduct STEM-related research while overseas • 137 are receiving awards to study languages critical to national security and economic prosperity To learn more about the Gilman Program and our next application cycle, visit gilmanscholarship.org.
