Within the @EarthMonitorOrg and CAPEO / @IFAD projects we are aiming at producing harmonized analysis-ready land cover products that basically represent "best-of-the-best" both in terms of spatial detail (resolution), thematic resolution (detailed classes) and user accuracy (strict cross-validation).
We just finished the 10 m and 30 m Global Harmonized Land Cover (GHLC; app.landmetric.org/) covering 2020 to 2024 and showing distribution of 40+ distinct classes, including: specific crop types, varying grassland management types, and forest types. We produced GHLC by implementing rule-based ensemble approach that integrates 24 individual land cover and auxiliary spatial layers from different projects (ESA WorldCover, GLAD land-cover and forest products, GLC_FCS30D, crop-specific soybean, maize, rice, coffee, cocoa, rubber, and palm products, Global Pasture Watch grassland products, Global Mangrove Watch data and similar). We implemented GHLC as an #OpenScience & #FAIR data project with all code available directly from codeberg.org/landmetric/ghlc so anyone can reproduce, improve and extend.
We are currently working on merging national land cover products with global products to produce a fully harmonized global land cover (aiming at spatial resolutions of 30 m and covering 2000 to 2025; 10 m covering 2016 to 2025). Expect first releases in early 2027.
Through the process of building the GHLC, we discovered that merging land cover products is not trivial: most painful in the process was having to accept that many products are unfortunately not maintained; many teams today prefer <12 classes which drastically reduces usability of such data; and some products are black-box systems with user accuracy potentially over-estimated. Nevertheless, all input layers we used are truly Awesome (we are standing of the shoulders of giants!) and we encourage these groups to continue maintaining these products. Big kudos to Mateo Moreno and the team for not giving up and continuously working on more usable more open data!

Soil Health Data Cube (#SHDC) has just been updated (to v1.1)! Dynamic soil properties and soil health indicators at 30 m resolution 2000-2024 for pan-EU as #OpenData. Several issues in data and front-end have been systematically improved (thanks to many colleagues from @AI4SoilHealth project and various national agencies). You can access the updated data from stac.EcoDataCube.eu and explore via EcoDataCube.eu (webinar: youtu.be/eMmhepWg6Cs?t=2206). For technical documentation see: shdc.ai4soilhealth.eu.
It is now also possible to visualize prediction intervals (uncertainty) and overlay SHDC vs various national cadastral and admin data with many thanks to the @GilabRs and colleagues from the @EarthMonitorOrg project.
Read more about how were the soil health indicators produced (doi.org/10.5194/essd-17-741-…), including soil carbon dynamics (doi.org/10.7717/peerj.19605). Projects funded by @REA_research Horizon Europe.
If you are at #EUAgriFoodDays in Brussels (agriculture.ec.europa.eu/eu-…), come to the AI 4 Soil Health stand on Wednesday 17th Dec (Day 3 – Agri-Digital Day) and get a walk through - how can you easily access the SHDC data and how could you use it to help manage land? Which soil agronomy data is still missing and what should we add to SHDC in 2026?

We are adding some 110TB of analysis-ready data to EcoDataCube.eu (all cloud-optimized as COGs or PMTiles). The upgraded system includes dynamic soil properties "Soil Health Data Cube" part of the @AI4SoilHealth and @EarthMonitorOrg projects, bimonthly time-series of biophysical indices (doi.org/10.5194/essd-17-741-…), including the vegetation height annual (doi.org/10.21203/rs.3.rs-652…) and #soilcarbon density predictions (doi.org/10.21203/rs.3.rs-512…).
We are focusing on preparing high resolution (10-30 m) data for 2000-2024 so that you can run various time of time-series analysis and monitor changes across pan-EU.
We have also added the field boundaries for pan-EU (doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.14229…) and number of vector layers using PMTiles format. See if you can locate actual fields and visualize long-term trends.
All data is available as open data via STAC (stac.ecodatacube.eu/), which means you should be able to develop computational notebooks (see some examples here: docs.google.com/presentation…) even on your laptop (assuming you only need to analyze local data).
Next mission: add all major pan-EU data sets from the EU Environmental Agency and the Copernicus Land Monitoring Services and further integrate data so analysis becomes even more seamless. Next major release is planned for September 2025 and should include monthly products and data updated up to 2024.
Many thanks to @GilabRs for the front-end implementation and all other partners on the EU Science, Research and Innovation projects @EarthMonitorOrg and @AI4SoilHealth
