There's been lots of chatter about baking soda as the hottest supplement of this summer's Olympics. Now there's also a peer-reviewed study supporting the claim that Maurten's new version works - and not just for short mid-distance events: outsideonline.com/health/tra…

As a start to 2024, 30 years of thinking about and studying endurance training distilled down to 12 lines: 1. Start with universal good practices, then sport specifics, then individual optimization. 2. Training is an optimization challenge, not a maximization challenge. 3. Focus on the big things first, not marginal gains. Think Maslow’s Hierarchy. That solves many problems. 4. A consistent and sustainable training process eats epic interval workouts for breakfast. 5. Simple metrics like program compliance tell us a lot. Keep the monitoring simple. 6. Good scientists, coaches, and athletes all share curiosity, deliberateness, and intelligent failures. 7. Triangulation and “Heads Up Displays” help pilots and athletes alike stay on target. 8. Detailed periodization models are generally overrated and under-validated. 9. Rest days are highly UNDERRATED. 10. Physiology is COMPLEX but training prescriptions should NOT be. 11. Think fewer Intensity zones, not more. 12. If the training PROCESS balances deliberate efforts, deserved recovery, & daily smiles, the results will follow.

Sports nutrition guidelines recommend a max of 90g of carbs per hour. But endurance pros are now pushing to 120g/hr and beyond, and new science shows the body can handle it. The unanswered question, at this point, is whether it makes you faster. More⬇️: outsideonline.com/health/tra…

A stunning long run in the mountains with @GetActiveRunnin yesterday. Sea, snow and summits, the perfect combination, followed by homemade pizza at the Campbell household afterwards!

⚡️ Are you strong where it matters? 🚴‍♂️ Durability emerges as a predictor of success in cycling races. Kind of makes you wonder why athletes keep testing performance in a rested state only. A thread on the emerging research on durability since 2020 -> 🧵

Team long run on the West Highland Way with Rob, Donnie and first stretch with Tom. This photo lies, it was hell’ish wet and cold for a large chunk, but that’s the west coast for you!

The wind came out to play in the gorms today 💨, some would say it’s character building. Cracking base miles with @GetActiveRunnin, Misty (Husky - aka ‘The Wolf’) and my pups.
