Tired of a low paying 9-5? Ready for a change but don't know where to start?
Here is all you need to land an entry level Sales job in tech making AT LEAST $80k 👇👇🤑🤑
Tbt to when you could make a career out of riding the 9month ramp with guaranteed OTE period and then job hop into the next role WITH a paybump
Some people made out like bandits.
- 4 roles, 6mo each, OTE pay
No free lunch tho,
the sales gods came to collect
The smart ones did 1-2 strategic job hops, upgraded tittle, and buckled down
Promos that used to take 9mo now take 18mo, smart ones squeezed that out and are cruising now
Replying to @BowTiedCocoon
The amount of careers that got derailed because of greedy job hopping in '21 and '22 is rarely discussed.
Many ended up getting laid off because they wanted to MAXIMISE THE BASE PAY rather than focus on building a reputation and competence in an org that was already solid.

Tech Sales cleansed itself of tourists and became a niche career once again...
We might never experience Covid buying/careerMobility frenzy days ever again but there's hope

There are 350ish decent quality entry-level jobs, bullish
Tech equity/rsu's are the biggest white/black pills
If you get lucky and build/work for the right trend+people at the right time AND stick around long enough, life changing
White pill -
TWO years ago Bridge was created
Last week it was acquired for $1.1B
Black pill -
Join Asana 2021, hold until 2023
Keep rolling the dice
Unicorns with Equity/RSUs that are liquid and worth something create two interesting types
5-8yrs ago they took a random role, straight out of college for $80-150k and some equity per year with 0 expectations
5+yr later their equity is mid/high-6figs, some even 7figs
(not counting personal investments)
If they stick around,
Type A,
Brings that C-Suite/Founder Aura + contagious gratefulness for life
Type B,
Believes they are the most gifted person alive, who is untouchable and worthy of all
When you join a sh*tty discovery call
And they mention they are looking at 3 other competitors and currently have your main competitor as a provider
Y'all believers in employer sponsored 401k?
% of your pre-tax income taken out and siloed in an account with 5-25 pre-selected vehicles for you to invest in and HODL until age 60
Sounds like a passive ponzi to me...
No early withdrawals unless "hardship" or you leave the company OR you turn 59.5😂
Better spent in crypto, biz attempts, and/or fam/gf/friends quality time when young ALIVE and full of poooowwwwweeerrrr
The sales lifestyle has waters that are too tumultuous for non-stop leisurely rowing
Sometimes you gotta tap into the most potent propeller within to get out of water swallowing territories
That inner primal thirst to conquer that is sparked by getting pissed off at a random thing
Find whatever that is, fuel that propeller
- "that guy is 10% above me, f that"
-"im short, f that"
-"couldnt leave the cute barista a phat tip, f that"
-"im one flat tire away from poverty, f that"
-"f these cold calls"
-"f working, wtf"
-"marketing girl saw me at 30% on the leaderboards, f that, never again"
*Same concept applies to finding your first role, the people on the job are NOT more special, gifted, or capable than you - they just got pissed off at one point and took action

Add your city/cities you know well
You're about to clock out for the weekend, some dude just b*tched at you because one blackberry had mold in it, and you make $50k/yr with OT
F*ck that
Spend 6hr this weekend seeking a better platform
Roadmap=
Your Marketing Material
-LinkedIn Profile
-Resume
-And for the overachievers a website, portfolio, cover letter and/or Loom video
Your Sales Strategy
-Find jobs on LinkedIn, YCombinator, a16z
-Apply on Company Site
-Dm + Email your future manager
Your Sales Cycle To Perfect via Failures
-Understand your ICP (find the right jobs/people)
-Land interviews (prospecting)
-Recruiter interview (round 1, qualification)
-Hiring manager interview (round 2, discovery)
-Mock Exercise (round 3, demo)
-Panel or BackToBacks (round 4, negotiation)
-Offer (Closed Won)
What to Expect, How To Prepare
-Understand your ICP/Land Interviews
--Align your messaging/profile. You can be a Finance Grad or a community college bro with 3yr of Restaurant Experience. Both are well qualified to sell something like Toast or Square IF you align your message appropriately
-Recruiter Interviews
--This is low-ball easy interview that a cute recruiter hosts to make sure you speak well, sound professional, and align to the job description. Know your profile/narrative, why you, why now, and why that company
-Hiring Manager Interview
--Same as above but more detailed. They will dig into your culture fit, sales knowledge, and company knowledge.
-Mock Exercise
--Live or TakeHome Mock cold call, cold email, or prospecting exercise. Work with someone who has experience and prepare OR fail a few interview rounds until you pattern recognize how to win. Or do it solo, its pretty common sense
-Panel or BackToBacks
--A repeat of Hiring Manager Interview with multiple people. Make sure to truly align to the company culture values while perfecting your narrative, why you, why now, why that company
-Offer
--Congrats closed your first $80k deal
Seems like after 3yrs or so many corporate jobs cause a disconnect from reality, money making wise
Money flows so easily and steadily that it creates an illusion for being able to quit and "easily" replicate a $90-150k income overnight + distorts your perceived value of time
Sales is one of the few to keep you grounded
-Feast and famine life
-Experiencing the value of a productive 30-min call
-Connected to the market, enough to appreciate the difficulty of distribution and scale
Best,
A 1hr meeting that could have been a 3 sentence email
The tech sales journey is like catching waves
You could be trying to surf (ent ae), bodyboard surf (mm ae), body surf (smb ae), or you just jumped in full of excitement with no equipment or plan wanting to float around and FEEEEEL what's going on (sdrs) only to get tumbled and humbled by a wave that from the beach "looked" small
But at the end of the day,
you can only catch waves if you're in the water
And after you're in the water long enough you learn to bow to the ocean, you can't control it, you can't force the wrong wave, you can't predict the next elite wave, you can only stay in the water as long as possible as often as possible and hope to catch the right wave as you learn to FEEEEEELLL them...
and yet no matter how long you stayed in the water you might never catch that elite wave due to weather, timing, being couple feet off, or you might be trying to bodyboard a wave that is more suitable for bodysurfing... who knows... But at least you got in the water
And at the end of the day when you get out of the water and talk to the elite who made it, they humbly say
-bow to the ocean (sales gods)
-get in the water often and for prolong periods
-and learn to enjoy YOUR ride
you never know when the next good wave is coming
Makapuu Beach
If you make less than $100k/yr, have a college degree or 2-4yr of work exp, and live near a city
Awareness is the ONLY thing blocking you
Tech as an industry has absurd margins, is tech forward, and salivating investors throw money at it daily
Translation-
pays great, freedom to experiment+fail+learn, more opportunity, forward-thinking environment
How To
For the non-technical people who also have no focused schooling for things like Law or Accounting, there is a hidden gem that can still take you to the promise lands
GTM aka Go To Market
Go To Market is group of jobs within Tech Companies that perform customer/market facing roles + support roles to those doing customer/market facings roles
Marketing and Marketing Support roles-
Ex. Growth Marketing, Content Marketing, Product Marketing, Demand Gen, Social Media Marketing, SEO, Event Coordination, Event Marketing... etc etc
Sales and Sales Support roles-
Sales Development, Account Executive, Account Manager, Customer Success, Renewals Manager, Sales Engineer, Sales Operations, Sales Enablement
MOST of these roles have a floor or $100k/yr and the requirements for entry-level are basically being motivated to be there
You can find these roles on
- Linkedin, Tech VC investor sites like a16z and Ycombinator
To land them you just have to
1. create a linkedin profile
2. resume cater to the job post
3. apply on the official company site
4. make some noise, reach out to your future manager and recruiters at the company site or make some current employee connections via LinkedIn and ask for a referral
The hardest part is it takes a few weeks/months of daily apps
Sales Kick Off
Half are pounding beers, discussing sports, and sharing ig cuties
The other half discuss business ventures, tax structures, crypto protocols, and ways humanity has been enslaved via psyops & algos
Both make huge commissions checks. Beautiful
Sales as an Individual Contributor has a left and right curve skew with a hole in the middle
50% regards, 50% gigabrains
Everyone is welcomed in plain language and your pay/performance is black or white. No tricks, no gimmics
Meanwhile technical roles seems to skew middle to right curve as they are often gatekept by lingo and KPIs made to obfuscate the simplicity of things. Similar to finance
70% mids, 30% gigabrains

Boomer Vs Zoomer, corp timeline
Who had it best?

- 2 weeks off per year
- Commissions slowly moon when in RE
- "Can't have to watch the kids"
- Gonna fly to see that client
- Flipping through yellow pages for prospects
- Direct communication, feelings dont matter in biz boi
Zoomer

- Purple hair HR
- 0 job security, PIP or layoff next, roll the dice
- Unlimited PTO or just WFH as you travel
- Commission to crypto 0 or moon overnight
- "Can't have to watch the babies" (it's 2 dogs)
- Dude didnt join the zoom :/
- "hey Ai, give me a list of 1,000 companies in X industry", insert on zoominfo, nooks your way thru 1,000 leads in 30min
- Your feelings are important, we must prioritize them and distort the underlying message
Tech Sales is the only place where you can come back from Presidents Club and be on a PIP'd the following quarter
Tech Sales as a job does not compound, it's always eat what you hunt, no fridge, and you wake up hungry af every quarter
Tech Sales as a Career does seem to compound for a few years
The $80k SDR qualifies you for the $120k/yr AE role, which qualifies you for a $150k AE role, then that AE role qualifies you for a $200k role... Cap depends on Niche w/in Tech+Company+Timing
But no one wants to be in Tech Sales, life off base and funnel commissions into coins, stonks, and high risk biz attempts - only way out
Or eventually churn out and force pivot to CSM, AM, RM, Management
Sales PEDs
- 15min walk
- 120mg caffeine, 200mg L-Theanine, 350mg NALT
- $10k unexpected emergency
- Knocked up babymomma
- PIP'd + debt due
- Need more coins FOMO
- Courting a cutie
- 5% from accelerators
- That one rep you compete with being 1 deal ahead
- Clawback revenge
Right of passages, tech sales
losing a high viz deal last day of quarter
80 days of dry spell, shotgun loaded, saved 10 day out of eoq by SalesGods
Praised for a masterful close, biggest deal of the Q… it was an inbound
Ready to Slack “just send location” to risk/legal/supportability/dealdesk team for slowing your deal momentum
yelled at via cold call, zoom, and email
on/off caffeine addiction + sipping from the company swag mug
Blurry vision after 10hr of screens
Spending your commissions before they hit your acc, when they hit you have a clawback + learn about comish tax rate
Questioning manhood after working indoors in a little screen for multiple days in a row
Hr scheduling a random call on friday
What others?
