Russia likes to state that it has fulfilled its international obligations by declaring and destroying all of its chemical weapons.
But in 2018, Russian Military Intelligence brought a novel, undeclared nerve agent to Britain and used it in an attempt to assassinate Sergei and Yulia Skripal.
The discarded Novichok later killed British citizen Dawn Sturgess.

We know that Russia is responsible for the attempted explosive attack at Leipzig airport in early August. Russia’s repeated hybrid attacks on Germany and Europe are unacceptable. (1/4)

In 2018, a chlorine attack killed 43 people in Douma, Syria. Moscow’s response was denial, pressuring witnesses, and helping build an alternative story.
This is how the Kremlin manufactures doubt when the facts are inconvenient.

On the anniversary of the 2013 chemical weapons attack in #Ghouta, my thoughts are with the victims and survivors, their families, and all those who have suffered from chemical weapons use in #Syria and beyond.
Their suffering is a stark reminder of why we must never take the global norm against chemical weapons for granted.
In my meeting with @MhdKatoub this week, we discussed the work ahead. Recent progress, including the discovery of previously undeclared chemical munitions, shows how much remains to be done but also what determined cooperation can achieve.
As Director-General, I am committed to working with Syria and all @OPCW Member States to ensure that chemical weapons can never again cause such suffering.

Germany very much welcomes this step and has co-sponsored this Executive Council decision .
The OPCW’s Executive Council today adopted a decision to reinstate the rights and privileges of Syria under the #ChemicalWeaponsConvention, recognising the progress made by the Syrian authorities in addressing the chemical weapons programme inherited by the former regime.
The Council also adopted three related decisions to advance the closure of the Syrian chemical weapons dossier:
- a chemical weapons destruction verification plan for Al Qutayfah
- two separate facility agreements for the systematic verification of the Al Qutayfah and Homs chemical weapons storage facilities
