Deciding to say hello at a conference: have I actually met this person or do I have a parasocial relationship with them because of Twitter? 🤔 #eeid2023

Lots of people have preconceived ideas about what working in a university must be like. Here, UCU member Chris has a message about the reality of it for far too many staff. Share the video. Support the strike. Join us in demanding change. #ucuRISING

Putting this as a quote in a lecture
Kind reminder that not every dataset is full of secret truths just waiting to be revealed by a capable analyst

I disagree with this policy @biorxivpreprint - multilingual abstracts are found in many journals!

The default argument against using black box predictions in medicine is because it doesn't allow to explain patients *why* their risk are high and what to do about it. That is legitimate! But it's extremely naive to think that the default explainability toolbox will get you there

I think we need a lot more methodological training and rigour in science, but I don't think 'methodological review boards' would achieve this. I think we need to drastically reduce the expected rate of output, giving people 2-10x more time to think, learn, & do their research.
“It’s time to make dedicated methodological review boards a standard feature at universities and other research institutions, as institutional review boards are,” writes @lakens in a World View article in @Nature. go.nature.com/3GkR5DI

I NEED EVERY UCU MEMBER AND SUPPORTER TO RT THIS THREAD. University bosses are rattled. Across the UK they are threatening UCU members with unfair and immoral pay deductions if they take part in action short of striking. This thread exposes every single one of them #ucuRISING

In epidemiology, the fact that jobs hurt often hurt workers is so well-known that we have a term to describe this phenomenon: the "healthy worker bias". 1/

When we study the health impact of risks in the workplace, we must account for the fact that many of the harmed may have already left the group of workers you are studying - due to disability or even death
