An article on my new Academically Based Community Service class where students from @Penn and West Philly's Sayre High School learn river science together, coordinated by @NetterCory with @WaterCenterPenn and @PennSAS and @PennEngineers
"The river, in essence, is an indicator of how we treat our environment. If you want to get a diagnosis of the health of our landscape, go to the river. That’s where everything ends up," says @dougsjunkdrawer in a recent article with Penn Today.

To start meteorological winter 2024-25
I have an essay in NY Times this morning highlighting the importance of NOAA and especially the National Weather Service.
As my focus is numerical weather modeling, I believe it is critical for economic and national security to have world-leading capabilities across all time scales from minutes (tornado warnings), hours, days, and months or years.
The new Congress in January 2025 can immediately get to work on several priorities. With every taxpayer penny under intense scrutiny, I argue that investment in NOAA is money well spent.

- Why are #beavers so good at engineering ecosystems?
- When did they first start doing it?
- Do they really help with floods, droughts, AND wildfires?
Get answers to these Q's and more in a new peer-reviewed review article I wrote with @ecohydro_gal!

Last Congress, we passed legislation that was the largest investment in human history to confront climate change. I proudly announced that due to our legislation, CA-19 will be getting a major federal investment in local conservation programs.

Excited to be the @CSUMB PI for this NOAA-funded project. This will create huge opportunities for our @csumbscience students and our region as a whole. Part of a large team of a few dozen organizations pursuing climate resiliency work in the Monterey Bay area.
🌊 Exciting news for #CalStateMontereyBay! NOAA grant provides $2 million for climate-related internships.
“For me, this is all about student success,” Horvath said. “Everything just aligns beautifully with the CSUMB mission and vision.”
